Mumbai's Orange Gate Marine Drive Road Tunnel has entered the main tunnelling phase, marking a major advancement in the city's underground mobility network. Using India's largest slurry shield TBM for urban roads, the first tunnel stretches 3.45 km, reaching depths of 52 metres and passing safely under major railway and metro lines. The project aims to reduce travel time between Orange Gate and Marine Drive to five minutes, integrate with the Coastal Road and Atal Setu, and ease congestion while cutting fuel use and emissions. Construction has already seen key technical milestones successfully achieved.
Mumbai's underground mobility network has reached a significant milestone as the Orange Gate Marine Drive Road Tunnel has officially begun its main tunnelling operations. Recognized as one of India's most challenging urban road tunnel projects, the work is progressing steadily and promises to transform east-west travel across the city.
Designed specifically for Mumbai's complex coastal geology, the tunnel employs India's largest slurry shield Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) for urban roads. Following a crucial breakthrough, the TBM advanced rapidly, excavating around 70 metres within just a few days. The machine was launched by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister & MMRDA Chairman Eknath Shinde earlier in December last year.
The project involves constructing twin tunnels covering over 7 km. The first tunnel, currently underway, spans 3.45 km and reaches depths of up to 52 metres, passing safely beneath the Central and Western Railway corridors and Mumbai Metro Line 3. Every stage of construction is being carried out with strict adherence to safety and engineering standards.
Once completed, travel between Orange Gate and Marine Drive will be cut down to just five minutes. The tunnel will connect seamlessly with the Coastal Road and Atal Setu, easing traffic congestion, lowering fuel consumption, and reducing emissions across the city.
Since the TBM launch, the project has completed several critical steps, including the lowering and connection of the backup system unit to the TBM shield and the successful completion of the initial tunnelling drive. With the main drive now underway, progress is expected to accelerate.
