Authorities in Prayagraj are planning to construct more than 1,000 affordable housing units under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) Phase II, led by the Prayagraj Development Authority (PDA). The project is currently in the land identification stage, with multiple sites shortlisted across the city, including Dhobighat, Peepal Gaon, Khuldabad and Civil Lines. Nearly 1,000 beneficiaries have already registered through the District Urban Development Agency (DUDA) and are expected to be prioritised during allotment. The initiative is aimed at providing formal housing to economically weaker sections, addressing urban housing shortages, and improving living conditions. The project also reflects ongoing efforts to align land availability with affordable housing delivery in growing urban centres.
The Prayagraj Development Authority (PDA) is preparing to construct over 1,000 affordable housing units under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) Phase II, with planning efforts currently focused on identifying and securing suitable land parcels across Prayagraj to support the proposed development.
The initiative, being coordinated with the municipal corporation and district administration, is intended to expand access to formal housing for economically weaker sections in the city. Authorities have initiated inter-departmental communication to expedite land allocation, which remains a critical prerequisite for the project's execution.
Multiple locations have been shortlisted for evaluation, including a 4,000 sq m plot near Dhobighat, approximately four bighas of land in Peepal Gaon, and around 3,000 sq m in the Khuldabad area. Discussions are also ongoing to identify additional land in Civil Lines, with coordination taking place between senior officials of the PDA and the municipal administration.
Officials have indicated that land allocation is expected to be finalised in the near term, after which the project is likely to move into the execution phase. The approach reflects an attempt to distribute housing across multiple locations within the city, rather than concentrating development in a single cluster.
The application process for prospective beneficiaries is already underway through the District Urban Development Agency (DUDA), with nearly 1,000 applicants having registered online. Authorities have stated that these applicants will be given priority during the allotment process once construction progresses.
The proposed housing units are expected to cater to urban households without formal housing ownership, addressing demand from lower-income groups who often rely on informal settlements or rental accommodation. The initiative is part of a broader policy framework aimed at improving access to secure housing and basic services in urban areas.
From an implementation perspective, the project underscores the importance of timely land acquisition and inter-agency coordination in delivering affordable housing schemes. Past experience in similar projects has shown that delays in securing land can impact construction timelines and beneficiary allotment schedules.
The development also reflects ongoing efforts to integrate affordable housing into existing urban fabric by selecting sites with access to infrastructure and employment zones. Authorities have indicated that aligning housing delivery with urban planning considerations remains central to the project's execution strategy.
As the PDA moves towards finalising land and advancing project planning, the initiative is expected to contribute to incremental expansion of formal housing stock in Prayagraj, while addressing demand from economically weaker sections through subsidised housing under the PMAY framework.
