The development of a modern astronomy and science education centre in Amaravati has moved forward with the signing of a land lease agreement between the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority and the Indian Institute of Astrophysics. The project, named COSMOS-2, will be developed on 5 acres in Anantavaram and will include a planetarium, research labs, and public science exhibits. The initiative builds on a previously signed MoU and aims to strengthen scientific learning, research opportunities, and educational infrastructure in the state, positioning Amaravati as an emerging hub for space and astrophysics studies.
A new astronomy and science education centre is set to come up in Amaravati, as the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority (APCRDA) has completed the land lease agreement with the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA). The project, named Cosmos Planetarium or COSMOS-2, will be developed in collaboration with IIA, Bengaluru, and the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.
The lease agreement was recently formalised at the Registrar's Office in Amaravati between APCRDA Estates Division Joint Director Zubin Roy and representatives of IIA. This marks a key step in moving the project from planning to execution.
The foundation for this project was laid when a Memorandum of Understanding was signed on November 28, 2025, between APCRDA and IIA. The agreement was finalised during a foundation stone event linked to the construction of 15 banks and financial institutions near the APCRDA headquarters. The event saw the presence of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, along with other senior officials.
As part of the agreement, around 5 acres of land have been allotted in Anantavaram, Amaravati, for the development of the facility. The project is planned as a modern planetarium and science hub aimed at both education and research.
COSMOS-2 is expected to include a state-of-the-art LED dome theatre, dedicated research laboratories, and public science exhibition spaces. The facility is designed to support training and learning in areas such as astronomy, astrophysics, and space science. It will also serve as a platform for students, researchers, and the general public to engage with scientific knowledge.
The project draws from the experience of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, which already operates similar initiatives like COSMOS-1 in Mysuru. With this expansion, Amaravati is expected to strengthen its position in scientific education infrastructure and research capabilities.
In recent years, Amaravati has seen multiple efforts to build institutional and knowledge-based infrastructure, including financial, administrative, and educational hubs. The addition of a specialised planetarium aligns with the broader vision of developing the capital city as a centre for learning and innovation.
