The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has collected over INR 81 crore from more than 15,000 property tax defaulters under its ongoing amnesty scheme, with only a few days remaining before the deadline. The scheme, which offers a 50 per cent waiver on penalty for one-time settlement of dues, will remain open until the end of the financial year. Overall property tax collections have reached INR 755 crore so far, with over 2.14 lakh property owners making payments. The civic body has extended working hours at collection centres, including weekends and holidays, to facilitate last-minute payments and improve compliance.
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has collected approximately INR 81.34 crore from 15,092 property tax defaulters under its ongoing amnesty scheme, as of the past week, with the civic body intensifying recovery efforts ahead of the financial year-end deadline.
The scheme, introduced to encourage settlement of pending dues, offers a 50 per cent waiver on late payment penalties for property owners who clear their outstanding tax liabilities in a single payment. The deadline for availing the scheme has been set until the end of the current financial year, with only a limited window remaining for defaulters to benefit from the concession.
Civic officials indicated that total property tax collections for the financial year 2025-26 had reached around INR 755 crore as of late March, with 2,14,900 property owners having paid their dues. Of these, approximately 61.5 per cent of payments were made through online platforms, while 38.5 per cent were completed through offline channels, reflecting increased adoption of digital payment systems.
Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde has urged remaining defaulters to utilise the scheme before its expiry, highlighting that the initiative has received a positive response from residents. The civic body has also accelerated its tax recovery drive, deploying a combination of digital communication and on-ground follow-ups to improve compliance.
To facilitate ease of payment, the municipal corporation has extended operating hours at tax collection centres, including weekends and public holidays. Collection centres are functioning with extended hours in the days leading up to the deadline, with provisions to remain open until midnight on the final day. These measures are aimed at accommodating working professionals and ensuring wider accessibility for taxpayers.
The property tax department has also adopted technology-driven measures to streamline collections, including online payment systems, SMS alerts, notices, and direct engagement with defaulters. Officials indicated that these efforts have contributed to improved efficiency in the collection process and higher participation in the amnesty scheme.
The scheme applies across residential, non-residential, industrial, and vacant land categories, requiring taxpayers to clear their full outstanding dues for the current financial year to avail the penalty waiver. The civic body has made both online and offline payment options available, including access through its official portal and a dedicated WhatsApp chatbot service.
The ongoing drive highlights the role of targeted incentive schemes in improving municipal revenue collection, particularly towards the close of the financial year. With a significant portion of dues already recovered under the scheme, the final days are expected to see increased activity as remaining defaulters seek to benefit from the penalty waiver.
