A recent Russian drone strike targeted Ukraine's Danube port infrastructure in the Odesa region, damaging key facilities including warehouses, administrative buildings, and energy systems. One person was injured, while power outages affected around 17,000 consumers and disrupted water supply in nearby areas. Despite the damage, port operations continued. Ukraine reported intercepting most of the drones launched in the attack. The incident highlights growing pressure on Ukraine's maritime trade routes, with officials noting a sharp rise in strikes on Odesa's port infrastructure over the past month compared to the previous year.
A Russian overnight drone attack targeted port infrastructure along the Danube river in Ukraine's southern Odesa region, causing damage to key facilities and utilities, according to local authorities.
Regional governor Oleh Kiper stated that one person was injured in the strike. The attack also impacted energy and industrial infrastructure in the region, leading to service disruptions in surrounding areas.
The Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority confirmed that one of the Danube ports was hit. While the specific port was not officially named, the authority reported that warehouses, quays, and administrative buildings were damaged. It also noted that facilities belonging to private port operators were affected. Despite the damage, port operations have continued without a complete shutdown.
The mayor of Izmail, known as Ukraine's largest port on the Danube and located across the river from Romania, said the town faced another large-scale drone attack by Russian forces. Local officials in the Izmail district reported that nearly 17,000 consumers were left without electricity following the strike. Water supply was also disrupted in the nearby town of Vylkove.
Ukraine's air force stated that Russia launched a total of 153 drones during the attack, out of which 130 were either intercepted or neutralised by air defence systems. However, debris from one of the intercepted drones reportedly fell on Romanian territory, according to Romania's defence ministry, raising concerns due to its proximity to a NATO member state.
This incident is part of a continued pattern of attacks on Ukraine's maritime export routes. Ports along the Danube have become increasingly important since disruptions to Black Sea shipping routes began earlier in the war. These ports play a key role in sustaining Ukraine's foreign trade and overall economy during the conflict.
Ukraine's foreign minister Andrii Sybiha indicated that the intensity of such attacks has increased significantly. He conveyed that port infrastructure in Odesa has faced more strikes in the past month than during the entire previous year, pointing to a shift in targeting strategy.
