Indian Railways has undertaken significant expansion of its passenger services in the last five years to address increasing travel needs. According to the Union Minister for Railways, between 2021-22 and February this year, the national transporter introduced 1,024 new trains, extended 907 existing services, and increased the frequency of 168 trains. This effort was aimed at ensuring adequate capacity across both lean and peak travel periods. In parallel, 4,651 additional coaches were added to strengthen the fleet and reduce overcrowding.
The ministry also implemented measures to manage waiting lists more effectively by linking limits to the available accommodation in each class. Special attention was given to improving travel for low- and middle-income passengers. During the 2024-25 financial year, 1,250 general class coaches were introduced on long-distance trains, with another 860 added permanently up to February this year. Currently, about 70% of the total fleet approximately 62,000 out of 89,000 coaches comprises non-AC seating, reflecting the focus on affordable travel.
Passenger volume in general and unreserved classes has steadily grown, reaching around 651 crore journeys in 2024-25, compared with 553 crore in 2022-23. To handle seasonal travel peaks, festival demand, and school vacation periods, Indian Railways operated nearly 74,800 special train trips nationwide between April 2025 and February this year.
Looking ahead, the ministry has reaffirmed plans to produce 17,000 additional general and sleeper coaches. These new coaches are intended to further strengthen affordable long-distance travel capacity, ensuring more comfortable and accessible journeys for all passengers. The combined focus on fleet expansion, service extension, and strategic scheduling highlights Indian Railways commitment to maintaining reliable and inclusive transport across the country.
