Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JN Port), India's largest container gateway by capacity, has handled over 8 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in the latest fiscal year, surpassing its previous record of 7.301 million TEUs. This milestone highlights consistent growth in container traffic, supported by its five separate terminals managed by leading global and domestic operators. The increase reflects both rising trade volumes and operational efficiency at the port. With plans for further capacity enhancements and improved connectivity, JN Port continues to strengthen its position as a key hub in India's maritime trade network.
Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), which manages India's busiest container gateway at Nhava Sheva near Mumbai, has surpassed 8 million TEUs in the current fiscal year, the highest volume since it began operations in 1989. The port had handled 7.301 million TEUs in the previous year, indicating a steady upward trend in container movement.
A TEU, or twenty-foot equivalent unit, is the standard measure of a container used in global trade. The port's container traffic is handled across five terminals: Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals (BMCT) operated by Singapore's PSA International, Gateway Terminals India (GTI), a joint venture between APM Terminals and state-owned Container Corporation of India (CONCOR), Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal (NSICT) and Nhava Sheva India Gateway Terminal (NSIGT) managed by DP World, and Nhava Sheva Freeport Terminal (NSFTPL), a joint venture between JM Baxi Ports & Logistics and CMA CGM Group.
The record-breaking performance reflects both the increasing trade volumes through India's western coast and the operational efficiency of the port terminals. Several terminals had already expanded operations in previous years, such as BMCT's Phase 2 expansion, contributing to the overall growth. The port has also been improving hinterland connectivity and infrastructure to handle higher container volumes efficiently.
This milestone underscores JN Port's crucial role in India's maritime trade, supporting imports and exports across sectors. With further capacity enhancement projects underway, the port is preparing to meet rising trade demands while maintaining smooth operations and minimizing congestion.
