Indian Railways has cleared projects worth INR 647.58 crore in Gujarat and Bihar to improve rail connectivity and reduce congestion. The plan includes a rail-over-rail flyover at Kosamba and a rail bypass at Bhagalpur. These projects aim to streamline train operations, improve safety, and increase line capacity on busy routes. The Kosamba flyover will support a key gauge conversion project, while the Bhagalpur bypass will help decongest existing tracks. The move is part of the Railways ongoing focus on improving efficiency and network capacity.
Indian Railways has approved infrastructure projects worth INR 647.58 crore across Gujarat and Bihar to strengthen rail connectivity and reduce congestion on key routes. The projects include a rail-over-rail flyover at Kosamba in Gujarat and a rail bypass line at Bhagalpur in Bihar, both aimed at improving operational efficiency.
The Kosamba rail-over-rail flyover project has been approved at a cost of INR 344.38 crore. It will connect the 9.20 km Kosamba-Umrapada gauge conversion section with the main railway line on the Mumbai-Vadodara route, which is one of the busiest corridors in western India. At present, train movement in this section faces delays due to intersecting routes and limited capacity.
Officials explained that a direct surface-level connection was not possible because of the alignment of the Dedicated Freight Corridor in the area. As a result, the flyover has been planned to allow trains to move without crossing paths at grade level. This is expected to remove operational conflicts, improve punctuality, and enhance safety by avoiding crossing movements.
The second project involves the construction of a rail bypass at Bhagalpur in Bihar. This bypass will help divert trains away from congested routes within the city, reducing pressure on existing railway lines. It is expected to improve train handling capacity and ensure smoother movement of both passenger and freight trains in the region.
Railway officials indicated that these projects are part of a broader plan to upgrade infrastructure and optimise network capacity. Over the past few years, Indian Railways has been focusing on reducing bottlenecks through targeted investments such as flyovers, bypass lines, and multi-tracking projects.
The Kosamba project also supports ongoing gauge conversion work, which is being carried out to standardise rail lines and improve connectivity in semi-urban and industrial areas. Similarly, the Bhagalpur bypass is expected to support regional mobility and improve connectivity in eastern India, where rail infrastructure often faces capacity constraints.
These developments come in line with the Railways continued efforts to improve reliability, reduce delays, and support growing passenger and freight demand without relying only on large-scale new line construction.
