The civic body has warned that it may begin acquisition proceedings if the land is not transferred within the given timeframe. The planned facility is important for improving fire response in one of Mumbai's most densely populated suburbs. The case reflects ongoing challenges in securing reserved public amenity plots and the need for faster coordination between authorities to implement city infrastructure plans.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has directed the immediate handover of a plot reserved for a fire station in Andheri West and has set a deadline of seven days for the process to be completed. The civic body has made it clear that delays will not be accepted, as the project is important for strengthening emergency response in the western suburbs.
Officials stated that if the land is not transferred within the stipulated time, the BMC will move ahead with legal acquisition under the relevant provisions. The administration conveyed that such action would be necessary to ensure that land marked for essential public services is put to use without further delay.
The plot in question has been reserved for a fire station under Mumbai's development plan for several years. However, despite this reservation, the land has not been handed over to the civic body, slowing down the execution of the project. The delay has raised concerns as Andheri West continues to see steady growth in residential towers, commercial complexes, and mixed-use developments.
Civic officials pointed out that the absence of a nearby fire station increases response time during emergencies. In areas like Andheri West, where narrow internal roads, traffic congestion, and high-rise buildings are common, quicker access to firefighting services becomes critical. The proposed fire station is expected to reduce response time and improve overall safety for residents and businesses.
The BMC has also indicated that this is not an isolated case. In several parts of Mumbai, plots reserved for public amenities such as fire stations, schools, and playgrounds have faced delays due to ownership disputes, pending transfers, or lack of coordination between agencies. In earlier instances, the civic body has had to initiate acquisition or seek legal intervention to take possession of such land.
Over the years, Mumbai's fire infrastructure has been under pressure due to rapid urbanisation and vertical growth. The BMC has been working to upgrade its fire services by adding new stations, modern equipment, and better connectivity. Ensuring that reserved plots are handed over on time is a key part of this effort.
The direction to expedite the Andheri West land handover shows a more firm approach by the civic body towards pending infrastructure projects. Officials have stressed that public safety projects cannot remain delayed due to administrative or ownership-related issues.
