Synopsis

The 20.5-km four-lane ring road in Rudrapur, Uttarakhand, is nearing completion, with authorities planning a trial run shortly after March 20. The project, estimated at around INR 1,100 crore, has reached approximately 95 per cent completion after nearly four years of construction under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Designed to bypass the city, the corridor will connect National Highway-74 and NH-87 while passing through 12 villages and extending into neighbouring Uttar Pradesh. The road is expected to ease congestion within the industrial city, particularly by enabling heavy vehicles bound for the SIDCUL industrial area to avoid urban routes and reduce waiting times.

The Rudrapur ring road project in Uttarakhand has reached its final stage of construction in the past week, with authorities preparing to begin a trial run shortly after March 20 to assess operational readiness of the 20.5-km four-lane corridor. The project, executed under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), has progressed to around 95 per cent completion and is expected to open to traffic soon, subject to final checks.

Planned as a bypass to divert vehicular movement away from the core urban area, the ring road has been under construction for nearly four years. The initiative was taken up to address increasing congestion in Rudrapur, an industrial centre in Udham Singh Nagar district, where traffic volumes have grown due to industrial activity and regional connectivity demands. The project gained momentum after initial delays related to funding and survey approvals, with a sanctioned budget of approximately INR 1,100 crore enabling accelerated execution.

The alignment runs along the outer areas of the city, connecting multiple strategic points and linking National Highway-74 and National Highway-87. It passes through 12 villages, including Shimla Pistaur and Malsa, extends into Temri village in Uttar Pradesh, and reconnects with NH-74 before joining NH-87 via Bhagwanpur and Chhatarpur. This configuration is intended to create a continuous movement corridor for inter-state and industrial traffic.

A key objective of the project is to facilitate the movement of heavy vehicles serving the SIDCUL industrial area. At present, such vehicles face entry restrictions within the city during daytime hours, leading to delays and congestion on peripheral roads. With the ring road in place, these vehicles will be able to bypass the city entirely, reducing idle time and improving logistics efficiency for industrial operations.

Officials have indicated that only minor works remain, including finishing activities near certain stretches, after which the road will be opened for trial traffic. The administration is coordinating with construction agencies to ensure timely completion of residual works and readiness for operational testing. The trial phase is expected to evaluate traffic flow, safety parameters and integration with existing highway networks before full commissioning.

The project has been monitored at both state and district levels, reflecting its importance in regional infrastructure planning. Once operational, the ring road is expected to reduce pressure on city roads, improve connectivity between Uttarakhand and neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, and support industrial growth in the region by streamlining freight movement.
