A Kerala murder convict who escaped custody last year has been arrested in Mumbai after months on the run. The accused, Vinish, had fled from a hospital where he was undergoing treatment and travelled across cities before reaching Mumbai. To avoid detection, he lived as a ragpicker, frequently changing locations and blending into crowded areas. Acting on a tip-off, the Railway Protection Force tracked and apprehended him near CSMT after a brief chase. Kerala Police have taken custody following legal formalities, bringing an end to a multi-agency search operation that lasted several months.
A 25-year-old murder convict from Kerala, who escaped from custody last year, has been arrested in Mumbai after months of evading authorities by living as a ragpicker, officials said.
The accused, identified as Vinish from Malappuram district, was convicted in a 2021 murder case registered at Perinthalmanna Police Station. He had been lodged in jail before being shifted to a hospital after his mental health reportedly deteriorated.
According to police, Vinish managed to escape from the hospital last year by misleading both security personnel and hospital staff. Following his escape, he moved across multiple locations to avoid being tracked.
Investigations revealed that he initially travelled by train to Nagpur and later reached Mumbai. In the city, he adopted the identity of a ragpicker and lived in crowded areas to avoid detection. He sustained himself by collecting waste and frequently changing locations.
The breakthrough came last week when the Railway Protection Force (RPF) received specific information about his presence near a railway station. Acting on the tip-off, officials laid a trap and verified his identity using available photographs.
When approached by the RPF team, Vinish attempted to escape but was quickly surrounded and apprehended near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in south Mumbai.
Following the arrest, Kerala Police were informed and a team travelled to Mumbai to take custody of the accused. After completing the required legal procedures, he was handed over to the Kerala authorities.
Officials said the arrest brings an end to a months-long search operation involving multiple agencies.
