The Delhi-Dehradun economic corridor, a 213-km six-lane access-controlled expressway built at a cost exceeding INR 12,000 crore, is set to be inaugurated, significantly reducing travel time between the two cities from over six hours to about two and a half hours. Spanning Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, the project includes advanced traffic systems and multiple interchanges to improve connectivity. It also incorporates extensive wildlife mitigation features, including a 12-km elevated corridor and animal passages, reflecting a focus on balancing infrastructure development with ecological considerations. The project is expected to support regional economic activity, tourism, and trade across northern India.
Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the Delhi-Dehradun economic corridor in the coming days, marking the completion of a major infrastructure project aimed at enhancing connectivity between the national capital and Uttarakhand. The 213-kilometre-long, six-lane access-controlled corridor has been developed at a cost exceeding INR 12,000 crore and is designed to reduce travel time between Delhi and Dehradun from over six hours to approximately two and a half hours.
The corridor passes through Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, linking key urban and regional centres while improving access to tourism destinations and economic hubs. The project is expected to facilitate smoother movement of passengers and goods, thereby supporting regional trade and economic activity.
As part of the inauguration schedule, the prime minister will visit Saharanpur to review the wildlife passage infrastructure developed along the elevated sections of the expressway. The project includes several design interventions aimed at mitigating ecological impact, particularly in areas characterised by rich biodiversity and wildlife movement corridors.
Among the key features is a 12-kilometre-long elevated wildlife corridor, considered one of the longest of its kind in Asia, which enables uninterrupted movement of animals across forested stretches. Additional provisions include eight animal crossings, two dedicated elephant underpasses of 200 metres each, and a 370-metre tunnel constructed near the Maa Daat Kali Temple to minimise disruption to natural habitats.
The infrastructure also incorporates 10 interchanges, three railway overbridges, and four major bridges, along with 12 wayside amenities designed to support long-distance travel. An Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) has been integrated into the corridor to enhance safety, regulate traffic flow, and improve commuter experience.
Following the site review, the prime minister is expected to perform prayers at the Maa Daat Kali Temple near Dehradun before formally inaugurating the corridor at a public event in the city.
The project reflects ongoing efforts to develop high-speed road infrastructure in India while addressing environmental considerations. By combining connectivity enhancements with wildlife protection measures, the corridor aims to balance infrastructure expansion with ecological preservation across the region.
