At least 30 people were killed in a stampede at a historic site in northern Haiti on Saturday, with authorities warning that the death toll may increase.
The incident took place at the Laferrire Citadel, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Haiti's most visited landmarks. The fortress, built in the early 19th century after Haiti's independence from France, was hosting large crowds for its annual celebrations.
According to Jean Henri Petit, head of Civil Protection for the Nord Department, the stampede occurred near the entrance to the site. Heavy rainfall at the time is believed to have worsened the situation.
The venue was crowded with students and visitors attending the event. Officials have not yet released details on the identities of the victims.
Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aim expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and acknowledged that many young people were present at the gathering. He did not specify the number of casualties.
Authorities have indicated that rescue and response efforts are ongoing, and the final toll may rise as more information becomes available.
The incident adds to a series of recent crises in Haiti, which continues to face security challenges and has experienced multiple disasters in recent years, including fuel-related explosions and a major earthquake.
