The Jammu and Kashmir government has set up a vacuum bag-based wool collection centre in Rajouri to improve wool handling and support local sheep breeders. The district produces around seven lakh kilograms of wool annually, but limited infrastructure has affected market access, especially for the Bakerwal community. The new facility uses vacuum technology to compress and protect wool, making storage and transport more efficient. Additional measures include distributing shearing machines and promoting farmer producer organisations to establish processing units with government support. The initiative aims to strengthen the supply chain and improve income opportunities for wool producers in the region.
The Jammu and Kashmir government has established a vacuum bag-based wool collection centre in Rajouri, aiming to improve wool handling and support sheep breeders in the region.
Rajouri is one of India's leading wool-producing districts, generating nearly seven lakh kilograms annually. Despite this, local breeders, particularly from the tribal Bakerwal community, have faced challenges in marketing their produce due to limited infrastructure and logistical constraints.
According to Rajouri Deputy Commissioner Abhishek Sharma, the new facility is designed to address these long-standing issues. He noted that the absence of proper systems has often forced breeders to sell wool at low prices or discard it due to lack of viable market access.
Officials conducted field visits last year, including to remote high-altitude grazing areas, to assess the challenges faced by breeders. Based on these findings, several measures have been introduced under the Strategic Investment Plan and the Holistic Agriculture Development Program.
As part of these efforts, shearing machines have been distributed to improve efficiency and reduce manual labour. The introduction of vacuum bag technology is expected to further streamline the process by improving storage and transportation.
The vacuum system compresses wool to nearly one-tenth of its original volume, allowing larger quantities to be transported more efficiently. It also protects the material from moisture, pests, and damage, helping maintain quality during transit.
In addition, the administration is encouraging the formation of farmer producer organisations (FPOs) to set up wool processing units. Under existing government schemes, such units can receive financial assistance of up to INR 30 lakh, with a 50 per cent subsidy.
The initiative is expected to improve supply chain efficiency and enhance income opportunities for wool producers in the district.
