The Defence Ministry, along with civil aviation authorities and the Telangana government, is moving ahead with plans to develop the long-proposed Adilabad airport as a joint-use facility. The project will allow defence-related training operations to function alongside civilian flight services. Under the proposed plan, the Defence Ministry is expected to operate a training establishment at the airport, while civil aviation authorities will oversee passenger and commercial flight operations. The arrangement is aimed at enabling coordinated use of infrastructure by both defence and civilian aircraft without operational conflict.
Officials have confirmed that a joint inspection of the 300-acre site will take place in the coming days. The inspection will involve representatives from the Defence Ministry, civil aviation authorities, and the Telangana government. The purpose of this exercise is to assess the land conditions, technical feasibility, and suitability for dual-use aviation operations.
Once the inspection is completed, the project will move to the next stage, where a detailed project report will be prepared. This report is expected to be completed within the next two to three months and will guide the final planning and execution framework for the airport.
The Adilabad airport project has been under consideration for a long time as part of efforts to strengthen aviation infrastructure in regions beyond Hyderabad. The current approach places emphasis on improving regional air connectivity while also supporting defence training requirements through shared infrastructure.
The development is also seen as part of broader infrastructure expansion efforts in northern Telangana, with the potential to support local economic activity and improve access to remote districts.
