The central government has approved road and bridge projects worth about INR 290 crore in Odisha's Ganjam district to improve connectivity around Aska. The plan includes a 6.72 km bypass linking NH-157 and NH-59, along with multiple bridge constructions over key rivers and a local nullah. These projects aim to reduce congestion, improve traffic flow and address flood-related disruptions. Funding support will come through central schemes, while a feasibility study has also been approved for a proposed four-lane greenfield road between Berhampur and Aska.
The central government has approved infrastructure projects worth around INR 290 crore for Ganjam district in Odisha, focusing on improving road connectivity and reducing congestion in and around Aska town. The projects combine road expansion and bridge development to address long-standing traffic and accessibility issues in the region.
A key component of the plan is the construction of a 6.72 km bypass road connecting NH-157 and NH-59. The project, estimated at about INR 159.5 crore, is expected to divert heavy and through traffic away from the town centre, helping decongest internal roads and improve travel time for local commuters. The design includes two flyovers and one underpass to ensure smoother and uninterrupted movement along the stretch.
Land acquisition has been factored into the project cost, with around INR 37.43 crore allocated for this purpose. This indicates that groundwork for execution has been planned in advance, which may help in reducing delays during implementation.
Alongside the road project, bridge construction works worth nearly INR 126.5 crore have also been approved. These include high-level bridges over the Rushikulya and Badanadi rivers, as well as a structure over the Tipisara nullah passing through Aska. These bridges are expected to provide all-weather connectivity and reduce disruptions caused by seasonal flooding, which has been a recurring issue in the area.
The bridge projects will be implemented under the Setu Bandhan scheme through the Central Road Infrastructure Fund. The state Works Department had granted administrative approval for these components in the past week, reflecting coordination between the Centre and the state government for faster rollout.
In addition, approval has been given for a feasibility study and preparation of a detailed project report for a proposed four-lane greenfield road between Berhampur and Aska. Around INR 66.35 lakh has been sanctioned for this study. The proposed stretch is expected to be around 33 km, and the final project cost will be determined after the study is completed.
Local representatives indicated that these developments are expected to improve connectivity between key towns, reduce travel time and support smoother movement of goods and passengers. They also pointed out that the infrastructure upgrades could help manage flood-related challenges more effectively and improve access to nearby areas.
The approvals are part of a broader push to strengthen infrastructure in Odisha, where road connectivity has been a key focus area to support economic activity, regional access and future development projects.
