Synopsis

The Punjab government has accelerated highway projects worth INR 1,904 crore in Ludhiana, focusing on three key corridors Ludhiana Bathinda, Southern Bypass and Ludhiana Ropar. These projects are expected to form a ring road and improve connectivity to the upcoming Halwara airport. The state has pushed for faster land acquisition, timely compensation and removal of execution delays. Alongside construction, local issues such as drainage, congestion and road safety are also being addressed. The initiative aims to strengthen urban mobility and support industrial and regional movement in and around Ludhiana.

The Punjab government has stepped up the pace of highway development projects in Ludhiana, with works worth INR 1,904 crore being reviewed to ensure faster execution. The focus is on three major corridors Ludhiana Bathinda, Southern Bypass and Ludhiana Ropar being implemented by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). These stretches are planned to collectively act as a ring road, helping streamline traffic movement across the city.

During a recent review, state minister Sanjeev Arora instructed officials to remove bottlenecks that have been delaying progress. He directed authorities to speed up land acquisition and ensure that possession of acquired land, especially along the Ludhiana Bathinda Raikot stretch, is handed over to NHAI without further delay. Officials were also asked to clear pending compensation payments to affected landowners to avoid disputes and interruptions in construction.

For the Southern Bypass, the administration has been told to resolve pending payments and expedite the transfer of remaining land parcels. The project is considered important for diverting heavy traffic away from city roads and improving overall travel time. Once completed, these corridors are expected to provide better access to the upcoming Halwara airport, which is being developed to boost regional air connectivity.

Attention has also been given to civic infrastructure issues linked to these projects. Authorities have been instructed to prepare a proper drainage plan for Sherpur Chowk before the monsoon season to prevent waterlogging, which has been a recurring problem affecting traffic flow. In addition, improvements in street lighting on the South City bridge and installation of safety features such as reflectors, signage and rumble strips have been planned to reduce accident risks.

Concerns around congestion and drainage near the under-bridge at the Verka Milk Plant were also reviewed. Officials have been asked to work on a long-term solution for smoother traffic movement in that area. At the same time, accident-prone spots across Ludhiana are being identified so that corrective steps can be taken.

Ludhiana, being a major industrial and logistics hub in Punjab, has seen increased pressure on its road infrastructure over the past few years. Several road widening and connectivity projects have been taken up to support rising traffic, especially from freight movement linked to manufacturing activity. The current push to fast-track highway projects reflects a stronger focus on execution and coordination between departments.
