The Madhya Pradesh government has approved INR 590 crore for developing an airstrip in Ujjain to support the Simhastha Kumbh Mela in 2028. The project will involve acquiring around 437.5 acres and enabling operations of larger aircraft under the UDAN scheme. The Airports Authority of India will handle development after land transfer by the state. Alongside this, projects worth over INR 15,000 crore across irrigation, education and other sectors were cleared, indicating a broader push to strengthen infrastructure and manage the expected rise in pilgrim and tourist movement.
The Madhya Pradesh cabinet has approved an allocation of INR 590 crore for the development of an airstrip in Ujjain to improve connectivity ahead of the Simhastha Kumbh Mela scheduled in 2028. The project will require around 437.5 acres of land and is planned to support operations of larger aircraft such as Airbus A320, which are currently not feasible at the existing facility.
The airstrip will be developed under the UDAN regional connectivity scheme. The state government will transfer land to the Airports Authority of India, which will undertake the expansion and operational work. Officials indicated that the aim is to strengthen air access to the city and handle the expected increase in passenger traffic during the religious event.
Ujjain, which is home to the Mahakaleshwar temple, sees steady tourist inflow throughout the year. The upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela, held once every 12 years, is expected to draw a significantly higher number of pilgrims. Improved air connectivity is being planned as part of a larger effort to manage this surge and reduce dependence on nearby airports such as Indore.
In addition to the airstrip project, the cabinet approved a wider set of development proposals exceeding INR 15,000 crore. These include projects across irrigation, education, forest conservation and administrative sectors. Among them, the Katna Micro Irrigation Project in Mandsaur district received approval with an investment of INR 88.41 crore, aimed at improving irrigation coverage and supporting agricultural output in the region.
The government also decided to continue key welfare and education-related initiatives, including the fee reimbursement scheme and the PM Shri School programme. These measures are intended to support social infrastructure alongside physical infrastructure development.
Preparations for the 2028 event have been ongoing, with multiple infrastructure upgrades being planned in and around Ujjain. These include road expansion, better regional connectivity and urban infrastructure improvements to manage large-scale movement during peak periods. The airstrip project is part of this broader planning effort to ensure smoother access and movement during the event while also supporting long-term tourism growth.
