The Union Cabinet has approved Jaipur Metro Phase 2 with an investment of around INR 13,038 crore to expand the city's metro network through a 41 km corridor. The project will connect key industrial, residential and institutional areas, including Sitapura and Vishwakarma Industrial Area, with 36 planned stations. It aims to improve airport connectivity, reduce congestion and support sustainable mobility. Targeted for completion by 2031, the expansion is expected to increase ridership and support planned urban growth and real estate development.
The Union Cabinet has cleared the Jaipur Metro Phase 2 project, with an estimated cost of around INR 13,038 crore, aimed at strengthening the city's public transport network. The project will add a major north-south corridor to improve connectivity across key parts of Jaipur.
The proposed corridor will cover around 41 km from Sitapura (Prahladpura) to Todi Mod and will include 36 stations. A portion of the alignment, especially near the airport and densely developed areas, will be underground to ensure smoother movement and minimal disruption on the surface.
The project will be implemented by Rajasthan Metro Rail Corporation Limited as a joint venture between the central government and the state government, with equal equity participation. Work is expected to be divided into multiple civil packages so that construction can progress simultaneously across different stretches, helping meet the planned completion timeline of 2031.
The corridor is planned to connect major industrial zones such as Sitapura Industrial Area and Vishwakarma Industrial Area, along with residential neighbourhoods, educational institutions and healthcare centres. It will also improve access to Jaipur International Airport, making daily commuting more efficient for both residents and workers.
The new phase will be integrated with the existing Phase 1 corridor of around 11.6 km through interchange stations and feeder systems. This integration is expected to create a more seamless transport network across the city. At present, Phase 1 handles an average daily ridership of about 60,000 passengers, and officials expect a significant increase once Phase 2 becomes operational.
The project has moved through multiple approval stages before receiving final clearance. The detailed project report had earlier been approved at the state level and later cleared by the Public Investment Board, indicating steady progress in planning and evaluation. There has also been participation from several infrastructure firms in early-stage bidding for civil contracts, reflecting industry interest in the project.
The metro expansion is aligned with broader urban planning goals such as transit-oriented development and reducing dependence on private vehicles. It is expected to help ease traffic congestion, lower emissions and improve overall urban mobility in Jaipur.
