The Vijayapura airport project in Karnataka is nearing operational readiness, with authorities awaiting a Supreme Court verdict on environmental clearance issues that have delayed its launch. The airport, developed by the state government, has completed construction and applied for operational approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. The delay stems from a broader legal challenge concerning projects initiated without prior environmental clearance, which led to restrictions affecting several infrastructure developments. The state has invested additional funds to upgrade facilities, including approach roads and safety systems, and has initiated discussions with airlines for connectivity. Once clearance is granted, the airport is expected to begin operations, improving regional connectivity across north Karnataka and supporting economic activity in the surrounding districts.

The airport, developed by the Karnataka government through its infrastructure agencies, has reached an advanced stage of readiness, with civil, electrical and operational infrastructure completed. An application has already been submitted to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation seeking permission to begin commercial flight operations. However, the project remains on hold due to legal proceedings linked to environmental compliance requirements.
The issue originates from the manner in which the project was initiated. Construction began during the 2021-22 period without obtaining prior environmental clearance from the Union government, with the approval process initiated subsequently. This placed the project within a category of developments facing scrutiny under a broader legal challenge concerning ex-post facto environmental clearances.
A petition filed by an environmental organisation led the Supreme Court to pass an order halting projects that had not secured prior environmental approvals. Although the Vijayapura airport was not directly named in the proceedings, the implications of the ruling affected its clearance process. Following this, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change declined to grant approval, citing the court's directive.
State officials have since pursued legal recourse, engaging senior counsel to present the case and seek reconsideration. The Supreme Court subsequently agreed to review the matter and heard arguments from stakeholders associated with similar projects across the country. The verdict has now been reserved, leaving the project in a holding phase pending judicial direction.
In parallel, the state government has continued to invest in the airport's infrastructure to ensure readiness once approvals are secured. Additional funding of around INR 220 crore has been allocated for enhancements such as approach roads, fire safety systems and night-landing facilities, enabling the airport to handle larger aircraft operations.
Authorities have also initiated preliminary discussions with airline operators to establish connectivity between Vijayapura and major cities, including Bengaluru. These engagements have reportedly received a positive response, indicating operational preparedness subject to regulatory clearance.
The project is expected to play a role in improving connectivity across the Kittur Karnataka region, which has historically had limited access to air transport infrastructure. Once operational, the airport is likely to support regional mobility, trade and investment, particularly in districts surrounding Vijayapura.
The timing of the launch will ultimately depend on the Supreme Court's ruling, which will determine whether the project can proceed under the existing environmental framework or require further regulatory action before operations begin.
