BEML Ltd has entered into a memorandum of understanding with Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd to collaborate on metro rail projects across domestic and international markets. The agreement, signed in the past week, establishes a framework for jointly identifying and executing metro infrastructure opportunities by combining BEML's rolling stock manufacturing capabilities with DMRC's expertise in project execution and operations. The partnership comes as BEML expands its global presence, following a recent overseas metro rolling stock order worth around USD 60 million in Africa. The collaboration also includes a focus on developing indigenous technologies such as propulsion systems and tunnel boring machines to support future urban transport projects.
BEML Ltd has signed a memorandum of understanding with Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd in the past week to collaborate on metro rail projects, aiming to jointly pursue opportunities in both domestic and international markets.
The agreement establishes a framework for cooperation between the two organisations, under which they will identify, bid for and execute metro rail projects by leveraging their respective capabilities. BEML brings experience in manufacturing rolling stock, while DMRC contributes expertise in the planning, execution and operation of metro systems.
Officials indicated that the collaboration is intended to strengthen BEML's presence in the rail and metro segment, where it has been expanding its portfolio of manufacturing and supply capabilities. The partnership also aligns with broader efforts to position Indian companies competitively in global urban transport infrastructure markets.
The chairman and managing director of BEML stated that the association with DMRC is expected to enhance the company's ability to deliver integrated solutions, combining manufacturing and operational expertise. He indicated that the collaboration would enable the two entities to offer competitive and globally benchmarked solutions for metro rail systems.
The managing director of DMRC described the agreement as a significant collaboration between two Indian organisations, highlighting its potential to support expansion of metro networks both within India and internationally. He noted that the partnership would contribute to improving urban mobility infrastructure through coordinated project execution.
The agreement also includes a focus on technology development, particularly in areas such as indigenous propulsion systems for metro rolling stock. Officials emphasised the importance of reducing reliance on imports by strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities in key components.
In addition, the collaboration aims to explore opportunities in the design and manufacture of tunnel boring machines (TBMs), which are critical for underground infrastructure projects such as metro corridors, high-speed rail networks and Regional Rapid Transit Systems. Developing such capabilities domestically has been identified as a priority for large-scale infrastructure development.
BEML's recent overseas order for metro rolling stock, valued at approximately USD 60 million for a project in Africa, reflects its growing presence in international markets. The MoU with DMRC is expected to build on this momentum by enabling joint participation in global tenders and infrastructure projects.
The partnership reflects a broader trend of collaboration between public sector entities to enhance technical capabilities and expand market reach. By combining manufacturing strength with operational expertise, the two organisations aim to improve competitiveness in the evolving urban transport sector.
