The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has enforced a new set of parking regulations in the past week, placing the onus on property owners to ensure adequate vehicle parking within building premises, with strict penalties for non-compliance across Ahmedabad.


The revised rules apply to both residential and commercial properties and require owners to ensure that all vehicles, including those of residents and visitors, are parked within designated spaces inside their premises. The civic body has prohibited parking on municipal roads, footpaths, and other public areas adjoining buildings, in an effort to reduce congestion and improve traffic movement.

Under the framework, building owners must appoint a dedicated individual to oversee parking management and prevent unauthorised roadside parking. In addition, properties are required to install clear directional signage and demarcate parking bays to facilitate organised vehicle movement within the premises.

The AMC has also addressed the issue of encroachments, directing property owners to remove any obstructions in front margin areas, including goods, temporary structures, landscaping elements, or barriers that hinder the use of available parking space. These measures are intended to ensure that open spaces within plots are utilised strictly for parking purposes.

As part of compliance requirements, property owners must submit an annual self-declaration certificate to the respective zonal office, confirming that parking areas remain free from encroachments and are being used as per regulations. The civic body is also planning to introduce an online system to streamline the submission process and improve monitoring.

Failure to adhere to the revised norms could lead to stringent action, including suspension or revocation of building usage permissions under the Comprehensive General Development Control Regulations-2017. Officials indicated that enforcement would be carried out strictly, with no relaxation for repeated violations.

To optimise parking utilisation, the AMC has encouraged property owners and housing associations to share surplus parking capacity. Building representatives may register available spaces through a formal consent mechanism on the municipal website, allowing visitor parking to be managed more efficiently in congested areas.

The introduction of these regulations reflects a shift in urban management strategy, with the civic body emphasising accountability at the property level to address persistent issues of illegal parking and traffic bottlenecks. Ahmedabad has witnessed repeated enforcement drives against unauthorised parking in recent months, highlighting the scale of the challenge in high-density commercial and residential zones.

The policy framework is expected to tighten compliance requirements for property owners and developers, particularly in established commercial districts where limited on-site parking and encroachments have contributed to congestion. By formalising responsibility and linking compliance to building permissions, the AMC aims to ensure sustained adherence to parking norms across the city.
