Titagarh Naval Systems Ltd has secured in-principle approval from the Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways for a brownfield expansion project at Falta, West Bengal. The project, with an investment of around INR 610 crore, falls under the Shipbuilding Development Scheme and includes government capital assistance of about INR 129 crore for plant and machinery. The expansion is aimed at improving shipbuilding capacity for defence, commercial and export markets. It is also expected to strengthen India's maritime manufacturing ecosystem and support the country's push for self-reliance in shipbuilding.
Titagarh Naval Systems Ltd (TNSL) has received in-principle approval from the Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways for its brownfield expansion project at Falta in West Bengal, as per a recent regulatory filing.
The proposed project, planned under the Centre's Shipbuilding Development Scheme, involves an estimated investment of around INR 610 crore. As part of the scheme, the government will provide capital assistance of nearly INR 129 crore towards eligible plant and machinery, subject to compliance with the prescribed guidelines.
The expansion is expected to upgrade the shipyard's infrastructure and technology, allowing the company to handle a wider range of shipbuilding requirements across defence, commercial and export segments. This move aligns with the broader national objective of strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities in the maritime sector.
Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Titagarh Rail Systems, Umesh Chowdhary, stated that the approval indicates the government's continued focus on building a strong domestic shipbuilding ecosystem. He further indicated that the approval acts as a significant step towards creating a self-reliant and globally competitive maritime industry.
He added that the proposed development is expected to result in a modern shipyard in West Bengal, supporting defence indigenisation while also catering to both domestic and international demand. The company believes that the project will contribute to positioning West Bengal as a growing hub for advanced maritime manufacturing.
The development builds on India's ongoing efforts to expand its shipbuilding capacity and reduce dependence on imports, while also increasing participation in global maritime trade and exports.
