DP World Cochin has recorded its highest-ever single vessel cargo handling, processing over 8,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) during the recent call of the ultra large container vessel MSC Ilaria at the International Container Transshipment Terminal in Kochi. The milestone, achieved in the past week, surpasses the earlier record of more than 6,000 TEUs handled during a previous vessel call. The development reflects the terminal's upgraded infrastructure and its growing ability to accommodate next-generation container ships. With expanded yard capacity, enhanced crane infrastructure, and improved power systems, the terminal is positioning itself to handle larger volumes of EXIM and transshipment cargo while strengthening its role in India's southern maritime logistics network.
DP World Cochin handled more than 8,000 TEUs of cargo from a single vessel, MSC Ilaria, in the past week at its International Container Transshipment Terminal in Kochi, setting a new operational record for the facility. The milestone was achieved during the vessel's call at the port, marking the highest volume ever managed in a single vessel operation at the terminal and surpassing the previous benchmark of over 6,000 TEUs.
The vessel, MSC Ilaria, is among the largest container ships to berth at the port, with a capacity of 16,616 TEUs. It measures 366 metres in length, with a beam of 51 metres, deadweight tonnage of 171,079 tonnes, and a maximum draft of 17 metres. The scale of the vessel reflects the increasing deployment of ultra large container vessels across global shipping routes and the corresponding infrastructure requirements at Indian ports.
The record handling included import, export, and transshipment cargo, indicating the terminal's operational capability to manage high-volume, multi-segment cargo flows within a single vessel call. The achievement follows a series of infrastructure upgrades undertaken at the terminal to support larger vessels and improve turnaround efficiency.
DP World Cochin has expanded its yard capacity to approximately 1.4 million TEUs, supported by the addition of new ship-to-shore cranes and electrified rubber-tyred gantry cranes. Power infrastructure at the terminal has been upgraded from 3 MVA to 5 MVA to ensure operational stability during peak demand. The facility has also implemented full electrification of yard cranes and integrated an in-house solar power plant to reduce emissions associated with cargo handling operations.
Officials indicated that the ability to handle vessels of this scale reflects the terminal's preparedness for next-generation container traffic and its alignment with evolving global shipping trends. The infrastructure improvements have enabled faster vessel turnaround times and improved handling efficiency, particularly for large-volume calls.
Located along key international shipping routes, the Cochin terminal offers logistical advantages for EXIM cargo originating from Kerala and south-west Tamil Nadu. It also supports coastal cargo movement across India and includes a Free Trade Warehousing Zone within the port, facilitating integrated logistics and distribution operations.
The development comes amid increasing competition among Indian ports to attract mainline container traffic and transshipment volumes, with terminals investing in capacity augmentation and equipment modernisation to accommodate larger vessels and growing trade flows.
