The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has initiated an intensified city-wide sanitation drive as part of its preparations for the upcoming Swachh Survekshan assessment. Civic authorities have directed all departments to undertake coordinated action to improve visible cleanliness and citizen participation. Special sanitation teams will carry out a phased cleaning programme across administrative wards, covering major and internal roads, footpaths, and public infrastructure. The exercise also includes drainage cleaning, road maintenance, and removal of encroachments affecting pedestrian movement. Additionally, the civic body has emphasised timely infrastructure repairs and improved monitoring of maintenance agencies. The initiative reflects efforts to retain Navi Mumbai's standing in the super clean city category at the national level.
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has directed its departments to intensify sanitation and maintenance activities across the city in preparation for the upcoming Swachh Survekshan, with a focus on improving visible cleanliness and strengthening civic infrastructure.
The directions were issued during a review meeting chaired by the municipal commissioner in the past week, attended by senior officials and department heads. Authorities have outlined a structured, ward-wise action plan to ensure that sanitation efforts are carried out in a coordinated and time-bound manner across the city.
As part of the initiative, special sanitation teams have been formed at the ward level to undertake intensive cleaning operations. The teams will carry out a phased drive from Belapur to Digha over a defined schedule, covering one administrative division each day. The scope of work includes cleaning of main roads, internal streets, and footpaths, along with the removal of obstructions to ensure pedestrian accessibility.
Officials have also been instructed to address issues such as the presence of homeless individuals in public areas, which may impact overall cleanliness standards. Additional focus has been placed on ensuring that roads remain pothole-free, manhole covers are properly secured, and lane markings and zebra crossings are repainted with durable materials.
The civic body has emphasised strict monitoring of maintenance works undertaken by various departments, including engineering, water supply, sewerage, and garden services. Agencies appointed for routine maintenance have been directed to adhere to quality standards, with officials tasked to strengthen supervision and accountability mechanisms.
Drainage management has been identified as a priority area, with pre-monsoon desilting of stormwater drains and underground sewer networks to be completed on an expedited basis. Authorities have set a target to complete these works before mid-May, ensuring that silt removal is followed by prompt disposal to prevent secondary accumulation.
The administration has also directed structural audits of municipal buildings, with immediate repairs to be undertaken where required. Officials have been instructed to ensure that no road-related works remain incomplete ahead of the monsoon season.
In addition to sanitation measures, the civic body has initiated steps to promote piped natural gas (PNG) connections in residential societies. Housing complexes have been given a timeline of three months to adopt PNG systems, with coordination underway to facilitate approvals for gas pipeline installations.
The latest measures reflect a comprehensive approach to urban management, combining sanitation, infrastructure upkeep, and service delivery improvements. Authorities have indicated that maintaining Navi Mumbai's position in the national cleanliness rankings will require sustained efforts across departments, along with active participation from residents and local stakeholders.
