Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) has emerged as the top cargo handling major port in India during FY26, moving ahead of Paradip Port Authority. The port recorded strong cargo volumes driven by better operational efficiency, faster vessel turnaround and improved coordination with stakeholders. It achieved key milestones during the year, including crossing major cargo handling marks well ahead of schedule. Paradip continues to remain a strong player with high bulk cargo volumes and ongoing expansion plans. The development reflects increasing competition and shifting rankings among India's major ports.
Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), Kandla, has emerged as the leading major port in India in terms of cargo handling during FY26, surpassing Paradip Port Authority, which had held the top position earlier. The change in ranking comes after DPA handled higher cargo volumes during the financial year, supported by steady growth across multiple cargo segments.
The port recorded consistent performance through the year and achieved key cargo milestones ahead of schedule. It crossed the 100 million tonne cargo mark much earlier than expected and continued the momentum by surpassing around 125 million tonnes before the financial year ended. This made it one of the fastest major ports in India to reach these levels in a single year.
The growth has been supported by better use of infrastructure, quicker vessel turnaround time and close coordination between port authorities, shipping lines, logistics operators and cargo handlers. DPA handles a wide mix of cargo including dry bulk, liquid cargo, break-bulk and containers, which has helped maintain steady volumes and reduce dependence on a single segment.
The port's performance builds on its earlier track record. In the previous financial year, it had already handled more than 150 million tonnes of cargo, showing its ability to sustain high volumes over time. Its strategic location also plays an important role, as it serves as a key gateway for cargo movement to and from northern and western parts of India, ensuring regular cargo flow.
Paradip Port Authority, which had been leading earlier, continues to remain a major cargo handling port, especially in bulk cargo such as coal and iron ore. It had also handled over 150 million tonnes of cargo in the previous year and is expanding its infrastructure to handle higher volumes, including projects related to cleaner and green cargo handling.
Overall cargo handling at major ports in India has been improving steadily. Growth in sectors such as petroleum products, fertilizers, coal and container traffic has supported higher volumes. This has also increased competition among ports, with efficiency, turnaround time and infrastructure capacity becoming key factors in determining rankings.
The latest shift shows that consistent operational improvements and better cargo handling efficiency have helped Deendayal Port Authority move ahead in FY26.
