The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has extended the deadline for its property tax amnesty scheme till April 30, giving property owners more time to clear pending dues. The scheme offers waiver on interest and penalties for old dues if taxpayers pay the principal amount for recent years. The decision comes after a strong response from residents. Authorities have stated that this will be the final extension. The initiative aims to improve compliance, resolve long-pending dues, and strengthen overall tax collection in the city.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has extended the deadline for its Property Tax Amnesty Scheme for the financial year 2025-26 till April 30. The move comes after a steady response from taxpayers, with the civic body aiming to cover more defaulters under the Sumpattikar Niptaan Yojana.
Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh stated that the extension was given to ensure that more property owners get time to clear their pending dues. He conveyed that citizens should make use of this final opportunity to regularise their records without additional financial burden. The civic body has clearly indicated that no further extension will be granted after April 30.
Under the scheme, property owners can avail a full waiver on property tax dues, along with interest and penalties, for the period before financial year 2020-21. This benefit is applicable only if taxpayers pay the principal property tax for the current financial year 2025-26 and the previous five financial years from 2020-21 to 2024-25.
Officials have kept the late payment charge unchanged at 5 per cent, similar to earlier terms of the scheme. The structure has been designed to encourage voluntary compliance while making it easier for taxpayers to clear long-pending dues in a structured way.
The amnesty scheme has already been extended multiple times over the past year due to consistent participation from property owners. Previous phases saw a noticeable improvement in collections, along with an increase in the number of taxpayers coming forward to clear dues. This has helped the civic body expand its tax base and reduce the backlog of unpaid property taxes.
The initiative also supports better record management and transparency, as more properties get formally registered in the tax system. It has helped address disputes related to old dues and brought many previously non-compliant properties into the formal system.
