Synopsis

The Jammu and Kashmir government has disbursed INR 3.80 crore as Union Territory subsidy to 4,288 beneficiaries under the PM Surya Ghar - Muft Bijli Yojana. The financial support has been distributed between consumers of Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited and Jammu Power Distribution Corporation Limited. The scheme offers a mix of central and UT subsidies for rooftop solar installations, with total benefits reaching up to INR 94,800 for a 3 kW system. Authorities have indicated that delays in some cases are due to verification and documentation processes, which are currently being streamlined.

The Jammu and Kashmir government has disbursed INR 3.80 crore as Union Territory subsidy to 4,288 consumers under the PM Surya Ghar - Muft Bijli Yojana, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah informed the legislative assembly.

The subsidy has been distributed among beneficiaries of both power distribution companies in the region. An amount of INR 1.80 crore has been released to 2,053 consumers of Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited, aligned with the central financial assistance structure. Similarly, INR 2 crore has been provided to 2,235 consumers of Jammu Power Distribution Corporation Limited under the same scheme.

He stated that the subsidy framework is largely funded by the central government through the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, while the Union Territory contributes an additional share to enhance the benefit for households.

Under the scheme, residential users installing rooftop solar systems receive central financial assistance of INR 33,000 per kW for the first two kW and INR 19,800 per kW for the third kW. This brings the total central subsidy to INR 85,800 for systems up to 3 kW.

Alongside this, the Union Territory provides an extra subsidy of INR 3,000 per kW, translating to INR 6,000 for two kW systems and up to INR 9,000 for three kW systems, capped at 3 kW. With this combined support, the total subsidy available to a household can reach INR 94,800 for a 3 kW rooftop solar installation.

The Chief Minister explained that delays in releasing the UT's share in some cases have been due to the need for verification of installations, checking of supporting documents, and integration with the national portal used for subsidy disbursement. He indicated that the administration is working to streamline these processes and confirmed that pending subsidy amounts will be released once verification is completed.

The PM Surya Ghar scheme, launched to promote rooftop solar adoption across India, aims to reduce electricity costs for households while increasing the share of renewable energy. In recent months, several states and Union Territories have accelerated implementation, focusing on faster approvals and subsidy transfers to encourage wider participation.
