The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has implemented an 18% annual interest charge on unpaid property tax and imposed surcharges on overdue water bills from the beginning of the new financial year, aiming to improve revenue realisation and compliance across the city. The revised penalty structure came into effect after residents were given a deadline to settle their outstanding dues before the close of the previous fiscal period.


To facilitate last-minute payments, the civic body kept its offices operational during the final day of the financial year despite a public holiday, enabling residents to clear dues through both physical counters and online platforms. Officials indicated that failure to meet the deadline would result in additional financial liabilities in the form of interest and penalties, increasing the burden on defaulters.

The MCG has set a property tax collection target of INR 325 crore for the 2026-27 financial year, reflecting an increase of approximately 18% over the previous year's projections. This upward revision highlights the corporation's focus on strengthening its primary revenue stream to support urban infrastructure, maintenance, and service delivery in a rapidly expanding city.

Officials have also introduced technology-driven measures to improve tax recovery. Artificial intelligence tools are being deployed to identify properties with outstanding dues, engage with taxpayers, and assist in resolving queries related to pending payments. This approach is intended to streamline compliance and reduce gaps in assessment and collection.

Alongside digital interventions, the corporation has intensified enforcement actions against chronic defaulters. Measures include sealing properties and disconnecting water and sewerage services in cases of prolonged non-payment. These steps are part of a broader administrative effort to ensure adherence to municipal regulations and prevent revenue leakages.

Civic authorities have emphasised that timely payment of property tax and utility bills is essential for sustaining city services and funding development works. The administration has urged residents to comply with payment timelines, noting that consistent revenue collection directly supports infrastructure upgrades, public amenities, and overall urban management.

The enforcement of higher penalties and the integration of data-driven monitoring indicate a more structured approach to municipal finance in Gurugram, with the civic body seeking to align compliance mechanisms with the city's growing infrastructure and service requirements.
