Global ports and logistics operator DP World has introduced alternative land transport arrangements to ensure cargo movement to Jebel Ali Port in Dubai as geopolitical tensions in West Asia disrupt maritime logistics across the Gulf region. Under the temporary contingency plan, import containers can be discharged at UAE ports on the eastern coast, including Khorfakkan and Fujairah, and transported by bonded road transit to Jebel Ali for final customs clearance. The measure is aimed at maintaining supply chain continuity for exporters and shipping lines facing operational uncertainties in the region. Jebel Ali is the Middle East's largest container port and a major transhipment hub connecting trade routes across Asia, Europe and Africa. The alternative routing arrangement is expected to support cargo flows while maritime operations in parts of the Gulf face disruptions linked to the ongoing regional security situation.
DP World has introduced alternative land transport routes to facilitate cargo movement to Jebel Ali Port in Dubai as shipping operations across parts of the Gulf face disruptions linked to the ongoing geopolitical situation in West Asia. The contingency arrangement allows containers destined for Jebel Ali to be discharged at other ports in the United Arab Emirates and then transported by road to the port for customs clearance and onward distribution.
Under the temporary logistics framework, cargo can be unloaded at Khorfakkan Port or Fujairah Port on the UAE's eastern coast before being transferred to Jebel Ali through bonded trucking operations. DP World is coordinating with shipping lines and relevant authorities to manage the inland transport process and ensure that containers reach Jebel Ali for final import procedures.
The measure has been introduced to maintain supply chain continuity for exporters and shipping operators whose cargo flows have been affected by the evolving regional security environment. Logistics firms across the Gulf have been assessing contingency options as maritime routes and port operations face operational uncertainties in the region.
Jebel Ali Port is the largest maritime hub in the Middle East and one of the world's major container transhipment centres, connecting global trade routes linking Asia, Europe and Africa. Operated by DP World, the port handles millions of twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of cargo annually and supports a large network of logistics, industrial and free-zone facilities in Dubai.
The alternative routing arrangement is intended to ensure that shipments can continue moving through the UAE's logistics network despite disruptions affecting shipping movements in parts of the Gulf. Cargo discharged at Khorfakkan or Fujairah will be transported under customs-controlled road transit to Jebel Ali, where standard procedures such as customs clearance and duty payments will continue to be processed through the existing system.
Industry observers note that the measure reflects broader contingency planning by logistics operators as tensions in the region affect maritime trade flows and energy supply chains. Shipping companies and port operators have been exploring alternative ports and inland transport options to minimise delays and maintain cargo movement for exporters and importers.
The eastern UAE ports identified under the arrangement provide direct access to the Arabian Sea, enabling vessels to discharge cargo outside the Gulf before it is transported overland to Dubai. This routing approach reduces reliance on potentially disrupted maritime passages while allowing cargo to continue moving through established logistics hubs in the region.
DP World indicated that the arrangement is a temporary operational measure designed to support customers until maritime conditions stabilise. By integrating alternative port facilities with road-based logistics corridors, the company aims to maintain cargo flows through Jebel Ali and limit supply chain disruptions for global trade partners.
