Synopsis

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) carried out a large demolition drive in Pune, removing about 78,000 sq ft of illegal constructions across the Lohegaon and Nagar Road areas. The action targeted 18 unauthorised structures, including residential units, commercial establishments and extensions built without civic approval. Officials said notices had previously been issued under the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966 asking property owners to remove the violations. As the structures were not removed within the given time, PMC teams carried out demolition under development control regulations as part of the civic body's continuing action against illegal construction in the city.

The Pune Municipal Corporation conducted a large demolition drive in Pune during the past week, removing nearly 78,000 sq ft of illegal constructions across the Lohegaon and Nagar Road areas. The operation targeted a total of 18 unauthorised structures that had been built without approval from the civic body.

Officials involved in the operation said the structures included both residential units and commercial establishments. Several of these constructions had also added unauthorised extensions, temporary sheds and additional built-up spaces that were constructed without proper permissions or in violation of approved building plans.

Among the properties affected during the drive was a well-known caf located in the Viman Nagar area. Civic authorities removed unauthorised portions of the establishment that had reportedly extended into mandatory open margin spaces around the building. These margin areas are required under development control rules to ensure proper ventilation, safety access and space between structures.

According to civic officials, the property owners had earlier received notices under the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966. The notices directed them to remove the unauthorised constructions or submit documents to regularise them within the prescribed period. When the owners failed to comply with the instructions within the given time, the municipal administration proceeded with demolition action.

Authorities said the drive was also carried out in accordance with the Unified Development Control and Promotion Regulations, which governs building permissions and development activity across Maharashtra's urban areas. Violations such as construction without approval, encroachment on mandatory building margins and additional built-up areas beyond sanctioned plans fall under these regulations.

The demolition operation was conducted by teams from the civic body's building permission and anti-encroachment departments. Engineers, labour teams and demolition machinery were deployed at multiple sites during the drive. Officials supervised the process to ensure that only the unauthorised portions of the structures were removed.

Municipal authorities stated that inspections carried out in recent months had identified several properties in Lohegaon, Nagar Road and surrounding areas where construction activity had taken place without proper permissions. These inspections were part of a broader review of building violations in fast-growing parts of the city.

Pune has seen rapid real estate expansion in areas such as Viman Nagar, Lohegaon, Kharadi and Wagholi over the past decade. Officials have repeatedly pointed out that illegal extensions, additional floors and encroachments on open spaces have become common in some developments as property owners attempt to increase usable space beyond approved plans.

In recent enforcement actions across the city, PMC has demolished large amounts of unauthorised construction in areas including Baner, Balewadi, Hadapsar, Shivajinagar and Sadashiv Peth after owners failed to respond to civic notices. Civic officials said these drives are part of regular monitoring aimed at ensuring that development takes place according to approved building plans.

Authorities further indicated that similar enforcement drives will continue in other parts of Pune. Properties found violating approved plans, development permissions or zoning rules may face demolition if owners do not correct the violations after receiving notices from the civic body.
