The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has finalised 34 locations across the city where parking facilities can be developed near Pune Metro stations to improve commuter access and last-mile connectivity. Most of these sites are within around 500 metres of Metro stations and fall under amenity spaces that can be used for organised parking. Civic officials have assessed the sites and found 31 suitable for development. Work has already started at four locations. The initiative aims to support Metro users who travel to stations using private vehicles and to strengthen the city's public transport network.
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has identified 34 locations across the city where parking facilities can be created near Pune Metro stations to support commuters and improve last-mile connectivity. These locations have been selected after an assessment of civic amenity plots situated close to Metro stations.
Officials from the civic administration stated that most of the selected sites are located within a distance of about 500 metres from Metro stations. These spaces fall under reserved amenity areas that can be used for infrastructure supporting public transport. After reviewing all the locations, the civic body found that 31 of the 34 sites are suitable for developing organised parking facilities.
The identified parking spaces are spread across the three Metro corridors in Pune. The initiative is intended to help commuters who travel to Metro stations using their own vehicles, especially two-wheelers and cars, and need safe and organised parking before continuing their journey on the Metro network.
The civic body's project department has indicated that these locations fall within the Transit Oriented Development (TOD) zone. Under TOD planning, urban infrastructure is designed to support public transport systems by improving accessibility around transit stations. Developing parking spaces near Metro stations is considered one of the measures that can encourage more residents to use the Metro for daily travel.
Implementation has already begun at four of the identified locations. These initial sites are expected to serve as the first phase of the project, after which the remaining parking spaces may be developed gradually depending on feasibility and demand.
Parking availability around Metro stations has been a recurring concern since the Pune Metro began partial operations in the city. Several stations currently have limited parking capacity, while others do not have formal parking arrangements. As a result, commuters often depend on roadside parking or nearby private spaces.
Stations along the Vanaz Ramwadi corridor and the PCMC Swargate corridor have witnessed increasing passenger movement after different sections of the Metro network became operational in recent years. Locations such as Vanaz, Anandnagar, Deccan Gymkhana, Bund Garden, Yerawada and Ramwadi have been identified as areas where better parking infrastructure could help commuters access Metro services more easily.
At present, a few Metro stations have pay-and-park facilities, but the number of spaces available is limited compared to the growing number of passengers. Civic officials believe that creating dedicated parking areas near stations will help reduce roadside congestion and make the Metro more convenient for people who depend on private vehicles for the first or last part of their journey.
The Pune Metro project, implemented by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro), has gradually expanded over the past few years with new sections opening for passenger services. As the network continues to grow and attract more commuters, supporting infrastructure such as parking facilities, pedestrian access and feeder transport has become increasingly important.
The plan to develop parking sites near Metro stations is therefore part of broader efforts by the city administration to improve urban mobility and make public transport systems more accessible to daily commuters.
