Kerala recorded a decline in road accident deaths in 2025 even as the total number of crashes and injuries increased. Data released by the Motor Vehicles Department showed 49,889 accidents during the year, leading to 3,733 deaths and 56,922 injuries. Fatalities fell by 142 compared to the previous year. Two-wheeler and motorcycle deaths also declined for the third consecutive year. Officials attributed the reduction in deaths to stricter enforcement and awareness drives, despite the number of registered vehicles in the state rising to nearly 1.9 crore.
Kerala has reported a reduction in road accident fatalities for 2025 even though the total number of crashes and injuries increased during the year. The figures were released by the state's Motor Vehicles Department (MVD).
During 2025, the state recorded 49,889 road accidents. These incidents resulted in 3,733 deaths and 56,922 injuries. Compared to the previous year, when 3,875 people lost their lives, the state saw 142 fewer fatalities. While the drop in deaths was notable, the overall accident count and the number of injured persons continued to rise.
Data over the past few years shows a steady decline in fatalities. In 2022, Kerala reported 4,317 road accident deaths. The number fell to 4,080 in 2023 and further declined to 3,875 in 2024 before reaching 3,733 in 2025. This marks three consecutive years of reduction in total deaths.
Motorcycle-related fatalities also came down. In 2025, 1,345 people died in motorcycle accidents, compared to 1,450 in 2024. The decline has been consistent since 2022, when two-wheeler deaths stood at 1,669, followed by 1,567 in 2023. Despite the continued rise in vehicle ownership, deaths among riders have shown a downward trend.
Officials observed that the improvement has come at a time when the number of registered vehicles in Kerala has risen sharply to around 1.9 crore. The steady growth in vehicles has contributed to an increase in total accidents each year. However, enforcement measures, road safety awareness campaigns, and stricter monitoring by police and the MVD were credited for helping reduce the severity of accidents and preventing more fatalities.
District-wise data showed that Ernakulam Rural recorded the highest number of accident cases in 2025, with 4,614 incidents. It was followed by Alappuzha, Thiruvananthapuram Rural, Kottayam and Kochi City. In terms of fatalities, Malappuram reported the highest number of deaths, followed by Palakkad and Thiruvananthapuram Rural.
The data indicates that while road usage and mobility have increased across the state, fatal outcomes are gradually declining, suggesting some impact of sustained safety efforts.
