Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has stepped up efforts to improve property tax collection by launching a focused recovery drive across all 60 wards. The initiative targets pending dues and aims to widen the tax base through a ward-level property survey. Officials confirmed that property tax under the Self-Assessment Scheme has been increased by 3% for the current financial year in line with government norms. With over 2.20 lakh properties under its jurisdiction, the civic body is urging owners to clear arrears promptly to support city infrastructure and essential services.
Mangaluru City Corporation has launched a city-wide drive to strengthen property tax collection and address pending dues from property owners. The move is aimed at improving revenue inflow, which remains a key source of funding for civic works and maintenance activities.
As part of the campaign, a special awareness vehicle was flagged off to encourage timely payment of property tax. Civic officials have begun identifying defaulters across wards and are taking steps to recover arrears from those who have not cleared dues for previous years. The corporation has indicated that necessary legal action may be initiated if outstanding amounts are not settled within the stipulated time.
MCC Commissioner Ravichandra Naik informed that property tax under the Self-Assessment Scheme has been revised upward by 3% for the current financial year, in accordance with state government guidelines and based on the previous year's market values. He stated that timely payment of taxes is essential for the corporation to execute development projects and maintain basic civic infrastructure.
The city currently has over 2.20 lakh properties spread across 60 wards. To improve accuracy in tax assessment and ensure that all eligible properties are covered, the corporation began a ward-wise survey exercise in the past month. The survey is intended to verify property details, identify unassessed buildings, and correct discrepancies in existing records.
Officials clarified that property owners can pay their dues through online platforms or at Karnataka One centres, reducing the need to visit MCC offices physically. The civic body expects that simplified payment systems and direct outreach will help increase compliance levels.
Property tax forms a significant portion of MCC's annual revenue. In recent years, civic bodies across Karnataka have faced challenges in meeting collection targets due to delayed payments and gaps in assessment records. The current drive is part of MCC's broader effort to improve financial stability and ensure steady funding for road works, sanitation, water supply maintenance, and other essential services.
