Synopsis

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has collected around INR 650 crore in property tax so far this financial year, with nearly 62% of taxpayers choosing digital payment methods. Out of about 3.6 lakh registered properties, close to 1.83 lakh property owners have paid their dues. The civic body is working to achieve its annual target of INR 1,000 crore by intensifying recovery measures, issuing notices to defaulters, and attaching properties with large arrears. Enforcement action has already led to recovery of INR 39 crore.

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has collected approximately INR 650 crore in property tax in the current financial year from around 1,82,894 property owners. The city has nearly 3.6 lakh registered properties under the tax net, indicating that about half of the total properties have cleared their dues so far.

A key highlight of this year's collection has been the growing use of digital payment systems. Around 62% of the total tax amount was paid through online modes such as UPI, QR codes, debit and credit cards, net banking, NEFT/RTGS and IMPS. Civic officials stated that the convenience of paying from home has encouraged more citizens to opt for digital channels. The corporation has also been sending reminders through SMS and WhatsApp to prompt timely payments. However, some taxpayers have reported facing technical issues while making online transactions.

The civic body has set a property tax collection target of INR 1,000 crore for the current financial year and is stepping up efforts to bridge the gap. As part of its recovery drive, notices have been issued to defaulters, and strict action has been initiated against those with large outstanding amounts.

So far, 77 properties mainly industrial units have been attached for non-payment of dues. Officials have indicated that similar action will be extended to commercial and business properties where arrears remain unpaid. Through these enforcement measures, the corporation has recovered about INR 39 crore.

Divisional officers have been directed to closely monitor ward-wise defaulter data and accelerate recovery. Before taking attachment action, property owners are being given advance notices, including seven-day and 48-hour warnings. The administration is also considering publishing the names of major defaulters to improve compliance.

Property tax remains one of the primary revenue sources for the civic body and plays a crucial role in funding essential urban services and infrastructure projects. With digital payments increasing and enforcement actions underway, the corporation is focusing on strengthening its revenue base without altering tax rates.
