Synopsis

The Telangana government is set to roll out the second phase of the Indiramma Housing Scheme from April, aiming to expand housing support to more eligible families. The move follows steady progress in the first phase, where around 4 lakh houses were sanctioned and a large number are under construction. The next phase will focus on pending applicants and urban housing needs, while ensuring stricter verification and transparency. The scheme is part of the state's larger plan to provide permanent housing to nearly 20 lakh families over time.

The Telangana government is preparing to launch the second phase of its Indiramma Housing Scheme from April, continuing its effort to provide housing for economically weaker sections. The announcement was made by housing minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, who stated that the upcoming phase will cover more eligible beneficiaries who were not included earlier.

The scheme, introduced in 2024, is a major welfare initiative aimed at providing financial assistance and support to families without permanent housing, especially those living in kutcha houses or temporary structures. The state has earmarked around INR 22,000 crore for the programme, making it one of the larger housing-focused initiatives in Telangana.

Work under the first phase has progressed at a steady pace. Around 4 lakh houses have been sanctioned so far, with nearly 3 lakh units currently under construction across different districts. The government is targeting completion of about 1 lakh houses by the end of March, while the remaining units are expected to be completed in phases over the next few months. Officials have also been monitoring construction progress to avoid delays and ensure timely delivery.

The second phase is expected to prioritise applicants who could not be accommodated in the initial rollout. This includes families without land ownership and those still waiting for approval despite meeting eligibility criteria. Authorities are reviewing pending applications and carrying out verification to ensure that only genuine beneficiaries are selected.

Another key focus area in the upcoming phase is urban housing. The state is working on a dedicated urban housing plan, particularly around growth corridors such as areas near the Outer Ring Road. This is expected to support not only economically weaker sections but also cater to rising demand from middle-income groups in urban centres.

The government has indicated that the allocation process will follow a transparent and merit-based system. Officials have acknowledged that there were concerns in the earlier phase regarding discrepancies in beneficiary selection, and steps are being taken to tighten the process and address such issues.

The Indiramma Housing Scheme is being implemented in phases with a long-term target of covering nearly 20 lakh families across the state. The government has maintained that housing support will continue until all eligible households are provided with a permanent home, making it an ongoing programme rather than a one-time initiative.
