Pune Municipal Corporation has approved an INR 126 crore flyover at Mundhwa junction to reduce congestion at one of the city's busiest traffic points. The 1.08 km structure will improve connectivity between Kharadi, Mundhwa, and nearby residential areas. Planned in coordination with a proposed metro corridor, the project aims to avoid future disruptions. With no land acquisition required and encroachments already cleared, execution is expected to be smoother. A pedestrian underpass has also been approved, while a railway flyover proposal remains under review due to technical challenges.
The Pune Municipal Corporation has approved the construction of a flyover at Mundhwa junction to address ongoing traffic congestion at the location. The project, estimated at INR 126 crore, will come up at Mahatma Phule Chowk, a key junction that connects Kharadi bypass, Mundhwa, Keshavnagar, and nearby residential pockets. Advertisement
This junction has been facing regular traffic bottlenecks due to rising vehicle movement from IT hubs and residential developments in Kharadi and surrounding areas. Commuters travelling between Kharadi and Mundhwa often experience long delays during peak hours, making the need for a grade separator more urgent over the past few years.
The proposed flyover, with a length of around 1.08 km, is expected to ease traffic flow and reduce waiting time at signals. It will mainly cater to through traffic moving between Kharadi and Mundhwa, while local traffic will continue to use the existing road network below.
Officials have planned the project in coordination with a proposed metro corridor along the same stretch. This is aimed at avoiding future rework and ensuring that both road and metro infrastructure can function without conflict. Such planning has become important in Pune, where multiple transport projects are being developed in parallel.
Authorities have already finalised the construction agency, and the project is expected to be completed within a period of about two years from the start of work. One of the key advantages is that no fresh land acquisition is required, as encroachments at the junction were cleared earlier, reducing the risk of delays during execution.
In addition to the flyover, the civic body has approved a pedestrian underpass at Kaleborate Nagar at a cost of INR 5.37 crore. This is expected to improve pedestrian safety in an area that currently sees heavy vehicular movement with limited safe crossing options.
However, a separate proposal for constructing a flyover over the railway line in the same corridor is still under consideration. Officials indicated that technical challenges are being examined before taking a final decision on that project.
The Mundhwa flyover is part of Pune's broader plan to improve road infrastructure in fast-growing eastern corridors. Areas such as Kharadi, Hadapsar, and Mundhwa have seen rapid development over the past decade, leading to increased pressure on existing road networks. In response, the city has been focusing on flyovers, junction improvements, and better integration with metro projects to manage traffic more efficiently.
