Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro) and the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) have initiated joint site inspections for the proposed Vanaz Chandni Chowk Metro extension in Pune, aimed at finalising alignment, station locations, and associated infrastructure. The exercise, undertaken in the past week, covers a 1.4 km stretch forming part of the approved Phase II expansion of the Pune Metro network. The extension will include two stations Kothrud depot and Chandni Chowk and is expected to improve connectivity to a key western entry point of the city. Authorities are also evaluating plans for a double-decker flyover along the corridor, integrating vehicular and Metro infrastructure. The inspections are intended to address design constraints, ensure traffic management, and minimise disruption during construction.
Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro), in coordination with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), has undertaken joint inspections in the past week along the proposed Vanaz Chandni Chowk Metro extension corridor in Pune to assess alignment feasibility, station placement, and associated infrastructure requirements before commencement of construction.
The inspections cover a stretch of approximately 1.4 km, forming part of the approved extension of the existing Vanaz Ramwadi Metro corridor under Phase II of the Pune Metro project. The proposed extension will include two stations one near the Kothrud depot and another at Chandni Chowk enhancing connectivity to a major transport node that serves as a western gateway to the city.
Officials from both agencies have been reviewing the alignment of the Metro viaduct, station entry and exit points, and integration with existing road infrastructure. Particular attention is being given to ensuring adequate space for pedestrian movement and vehicular traffic, especially in high-density areas along the corridor. Authorities have also emphasised the need for clearly defined access points to prevent congestion around station zones once operational.
A key component under consideration is the development of a double-decker flyover along the stretch, which will carry vehicular traffic on one level and the Metro viaduct above. The integrated structure is intended to optimise limited right-of-way in the corridor while addressing existing congestion at Chandni Chowk and surrounding junctions. The project also includes plans for a pedestrian overbridge to facilitate safe access across the Katraj Dehu Road bypass and improve connectivity to the proposed Metro station.
The inspections are part of preparatory work ahead of tendering and execution. Maha Metro is in the process of appointing a construction agency, with design finalisation being a prerequisite for initiating on-ground work. Officials indicated that early-stage coordination between civic and Metro authorities is aimed at reducing construction-related disruptions and avoiding design revisions at later stages.
The Vanaz Chandni Chowk extension is one of the shorter but strategically significant links in the Phase II expansion, intended to extend the reach of the east west Aqua Line beyond its current terminus at Vanaz. The corridor is expected to improve access to residential and institutional areas in Kothrud and enhance last-mile connectivity for commuters entering Pune from the Mumbai Bengaluru highway corridor.
Authorities have also been engaging with local stakeholders during inspections, with residents highlighting the importance of ensuring connectivity from both sides of the bypass and maintaining traffic flow during construction. These inputs are being considered as part of the final design process.
The joint exercise reflects a coordinated approach to infrastructure planning in Pune, where Metro expansion projects are being aligned with road development and traffic management strategies to support increasing urban mobility demand.
