Synopsis

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation for infrastructure projects worth INR 18,680 crore in West Bengal earlier this week. The initiatives cover highways, railways, and ports to improve connectivity across the state and eastern India. Key projects include the Kharagpur Moregram economic corridor, bypasses, bridges, redeveloped railway stations, mechanised port facilities at Haldia and Khidderpore, and new express train services. These upgrades aim to reduce travel time, boost trade and tourism, and provide better facilities for residents, entrepreneurs, and students, while preparing the state for upcoming elections.

In Kolkata earlier this week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched infrastructure projects worth INR 18,680 crore, aiming to strengthen connectivity and economic activity in West Bengal and the eastern region. He noted that these developments would improve the lives of residents, expand business opportunities, and support trade and tourism. The projects cover roads, railways, and ports, reflecting a comprehensive approach to modernising regional transport networks.

The prime minister laid the foundation for five sections of the 231 km four lane Kharagpur Moregram economic corridor, part of the larger Kharagpur Siliguri route. This corridor is expected to reduce the distance by approximately 120 km and cut travel time by seven to eight hours. It will connect major national highways including NH 16, NH 19, NH 14, and NH 12 and pass through Paschim Medinipur, Bankura, Hooghly, Purba Bardhaman, Birbhum, and Murshidabad districts.

Additional road projects include the 5.6 km Dubrajpur bypass and four lane bridges over the Kangshabati and Shilabati rivers on NH 14. Sections of NH 19 and NH 114 were inaugurated to ease congestion, improve road safety, and enhance regional connectivity. Officials highlighted that these projects would provide smoother transit for farmers, traders, students, and daily commuters.

Railway development was also a key focus. The prime minister inaugurated six redeveloped stations under the Amrit Station scheme Kamakhyaguri, Anara, Tamluk, Haldia, Barabhum, and Siuri aiming to modernise facilities and improve passenger experience. He also flagged off the Purulia Anand Vihar Terminal Express, added a 16 km third rail line between Belda and Dantan, and implemented an automatic block signalling system between Kalaikunda and Kanimohuli, enhancing capacity and safety on key South Eastern Railway routes.

Port and waterway improvements include the mechanisation of Berth 2 at Haldia Dock Complex and a rejuvenation project at Khidderpore Docks to increase cargo handling efficiency. Foundation stones were laid for mechanisation of Berth 5 at Haldia, renovation of the Bascule Bridge in Kolkata, and development of a river cruise terminal and tourism facility near the Indenture Memorial. These projects aim to modernise ports that had lagged for decades, supporting trade and tourism growth.

Officials noted that these initiatives coincide with upcoming state assembly elections, reflecting the government's continued efforts to improve infrastructure and economic potential across West Bengal. The comprehensive focus on roads, railways, and ports is expected to provide long-term benefits by supporting trade, improving connectivity, and creating new economic opportunities for residents and local businesses.
