The Government of Odisha has initiated a 10-day statewide road safety campaign aimed at curbing traffic violations and reducing the rising number of road accidents across the state. The initiative, led by the State Transport Authority, is scheduled to run from March 21 to March 31 and will combine enforcement actions with public awareness activities coordinated by regional transport offices. The drive will focus on common violations such as over-speeding, drink driving, triple riding on two-wheelers, riding without helmets, wrong-side driving and operating vehicles without valid licences. Authorities have instructed transport officials to intensify checks along national highways, state highways, mining corridors, urban arterial roads and accident-prone stretches. The campaign will also involve coordination with local police to conduct inspections and awareness programmes intended to improve compliance with traffic regulations and enhance road safety across Odisha.

Transport authorities issued instructions to all Regional Transport Officers (RTOs) and Additional Regional Transport Officers to implement the campaign within their respective jurisdictions, as road accidents and fatalities continue to remain a concern across Odisha. The programme is designed to combine stricter enforcement of traffic regulations with educational outreach intended to encourage safer road behaviour among motorists and other road users.
Officials indicated that the drive will concentrate on traffic violations frequently linked to accidents. These include over-speeding, drink driving, riding two-wheelers without helmets, triple riding, wrong-side driving, driving without valid licences and overloading of goods and passenger vehicles. Enforcement teams have also been instructed to monitor transport vehicles, particularly tippers and dumpers operating in mining areas, after authorities noted instances where such vehicles were reportedly driven by individuals without proper authorisation or licences.
The campaign will include intensified inspections at accident-prone locations across the state, including national highways, state highways, major intersections, urban arterial roads, mining and industrial corridors, market areas and bus terminals. Authorities expect these checks to improve compliance with traffic rules and deter risky driving practices that contribute to road accidents.
Each RTO office has been asked to prepare a local enforcement plan identifying vulnerable corridors and high-risk locations within its jurisdiction. The plans will specify deployment of enforcement teams, checking schedules and supervisory arrangements intended to ensure the effective implementation of the campaign across districts.
Transport authorities have also directed officials to place particular emphasis on enforcement during evening and night hours. These periods are often associated with a higher incidence of violations such as drink driving and speeding, especially on highways and freight transport routes.
Coordination between the transport department and police authorities will form a key component of the campaign. Regional transport officials have been advised to work with superintendents of police, deputy commissioners of police and local police units to support enforcement operations, manage traffic during awareness programmes and conduct checks at vulnerable accident locations.
Alongside enforcement activities, the campaign will also include road safety awareness programmes organised by transport offices to educate motorists and the general public about responsible driving practices. Officials indicated that the combined approach of enforcement and education is intended to improve compliance with traffic regulations and contribute to a reduction in road accidents and fatalities across Odisha.
