The Punjab government has earmarked INR 1,000 crore in the state budget to strengthen urban infrastructure through the Municipal Development Fund (MDF), marking a substantial increase from the previous allocation. The funding will be made available to urban local bodies across the state to support the creation and upgrading of civic infrastructure such as roads, water supply systems, sewerage networks, drainage, sanitation and solid waste management. State officials indicated that the enhanced allocation is intended to help municipalities address growing pressure on civic services caused by urban population growth and expanding city limits. A portion of the fund will also be used for the operation and maintenance of water supply and sewerage infrastructure to ensure continued service delivery. The initiative forms part of Punjab's broader urban development strategy aimed at improving municipal infrastructure and service efficiency.
The Punjab government has allocated INR 1,000 crore under the Municipal Development Fund (MDF) to strengthen urban infrastructure across cities and towns in the state. The allocation was announced during the state budget presentation and is intended to support urban local bodies in upgrading essential civic infrastructure and services.
The funding represents a substantial increase compared with previous allocations to the fund. The MDF allocation has been raised to INR 1,000 crore from around INR 225 crore in the previous financial year, reflecting the state government's focus on addressing growing urban infrastructure demands.
Officials indicated that the enhanced funding will be used to support a wide range of infrastructure projects across municipalities. Urban local bodies will be able to utilise the resources for the development and improvement of roads, street lighting, water supply systems, sewerage networks, drainage infrastructure, sanitation facilities and solid waste management systems. These investments are expected to improve the functioning of municipal services in rapidly expanding urban areas across Punjab.
The state government has noted that many urban centres in Punjab are experiencing increasing pressure on civic infrastructure due to population growth and the expansion of urban boundaries. Municipalities have been facing rising demand for water supply, waste management services and improved drainage systems, particularly in larger cities where urbanisation has accelerated in recent years.
In addition to supporting new infrastructure projects, the Municipal Development Fund will also finance the operation and maintenance of existing systems. Around 20 percent of the allocated amount has been earmarked specifically for maintaining water supply and sewerage infrastructure so that newly created assets continue to function efficiently over time.
State officials stated that strengthening municipal infrastructure is essential to ensuring sustainable urban growth and improving the quality of civic services. Urban local bodies are expected to use the funds for projects that address immediate service gaps while also supporting long-term urban planning requirements.
The budget announcement forms part of a wider urban development programme in Punjab. Alongside the Municipal Development Fund allocation, the state is implementing infrastructure projects under national initiatives such as AMRUT 2.0, which includes investments in water supply networks, water treatment facilities and sewerage infrastructure across numerous towns.
Officials indicated that the expanded municipal funding framework will help cities upgrade basic infrastructure while supporting the operational capacity of local governments responsible for service delivery. The state government expects that strengthening urban infrastructure through the Municipal Development Fund will enable municipalities to respond more effectively to population growth, urban expansion and increasing demand for reliable civic services across Punjab's cities and towns.
