Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently launched and dedicated infrastructure and energy projects worth around INR 5,650 crore in Tamil Nadu. The initiatives include a large city gas distribution network, a lubricant manufacturing facility, rural road projects and new railway services. The city gas network alone is valued at about INR 3,700 crore and will expand piped natural gas access for households, commercial establishments and industries. Several train services were also flagged off to improve connectivity between southern districts and other parts of the country. The projects aim to strengthen energy supply, transportation links and regional economic activity.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently launched and dedicated multiple infrastructure and energy projects worth around INR 5,650 crore in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu. The projects span sectors such as petroleum manufacturing, energy distribution, rail connectivity and rural road infrastructure. These initiatives are aimed at improving connectivity, expanding clean energy access and supporting economic development across different regions of the state.
One of the key projects launched is a city gas distribution network valued at around INR 3,700 crore. The project will expand the supply of piped natural gas to households, commercial establishments and industries across several districts. The network will also support compressed natural gas supply for transport, which is expected to help reduce dependence on conventional fuels and support cleaner energy use.
The Prime Minister also dedicated the Indian Oil Corporation's lubricant blending plant located in Chennai. The facility is considered one of the largest lubricant blending plants in the country and is expected to strengthen lubricant production and distribution capacity in southern India. The plant will cater to both domestic demand and export markets, while also supporting the supply chain for industries such as automotive, manufacturing and logistics.
Infrastructure development in rural areas was another focus of the programme. Road projects covering about 370 kilometres were launched under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana. These roads are expected to improve connectivity between villages and nearby towns, helping residents access healthcare, education and markets more easily. Improved rural roads are also expected to help farmers transport agricultural produce to mandis and processing centres more efficiently.
Railway connectivity was strengthened with the launch of five new train services. Two Amrit Bharat Express trains were flagged off between Nagercoil and Charlapalli, and between Podanur and Dhanbad. These long-distance services are expected to improve connectivity between Tamil Nadu and states such as Telangana and Jharkhand.
Additional train services include express trains connecting Rameswaram and Tirunelveli with Mangaluru, which will improve rail access between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. A passenger train service between Mayiladuthurai, Thiruvarur and Karaikkudi was also flagged off. These routes are expected to improve mobility for daily passengers and support regional travel across southern districts.
The introduction of new train services is also expected to support tourism and trade in cities such as Rameswaram, Nagercoil and Coimbatore. Improved rail links can help facilitate easier movement of travellers and goods, which may benefit local businesses and small industries in these regions.
During the programme, the Prime Minister stated that infrastructure development remains an important priority for strengthening the country's economic growth. He noted that improving transport networks, expanding energy infrastructure and supporting industrial activity can create employment opportunities and improve living conditions for people.
Over the past few years, several large infrastructure projects have been announced across southern India, including railway station redevelopment and highway expansion programmes. Initiatives such as the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme are aimed at modernising railway stations and improving passenger facilities while strengthening connectivity across different parts of the country.
