Swedish construction firm Skanska has secured a USD 102 million contract from the Port of Los Angeles to build the Avalon Pedestrian Bridge and Promenade Gateway, a project that will convert 12 acres of former industrial land into public spaces. The scope includes a cable stayed pedestrian bridge over active rail lines, landscaped plazas, terraces and pathways that will link with the recently finished Wilmington Waterfront Promenade. Work on the site began this March and is scheduled to run through mid 2028, extending public access and supporting waterfront redevelopment. The contract is part of Skanska's first quarter U.S. order bookings.
Swedish construction group Skanska has been awarded a USD 102 million contract by the Port of Los Angeles to design and construct the Avalon Pedestrian Bridge and Promenade Gateway in Los Angeles, California. The project covers about 12 acres of previously industrial land on the waterfront that is being re imagined as open public space.
The planned facilities include a prominent cable stayed concrete pedestrian bridge intended to provide a safe crossing over active rail operations, and a promenade gateway with landscaped entry plazas, open terrace seating areas and new walking routes. This infrastructure will directly connect to the recently completed Wilmington Waterfront Promenade, enhancing continuity and access along the shoreline.
Construction started in March and is programmed to continue until around August 2028, making it a multi year build that fits into broader efforts to reopen and revitalise former industrial waterfront land for community use. The project is included in Skanska's U.S. order bookings for the current quarter.
