Synopsis

The Union Cabinet approved infrastructure projects totaling INR 8,313 crore to strengthen highway and railway networks across India. Key approvals include a four lane highway in Madhya Pradesh linking Ujjain with the Delhi Mumbai Expressway, which will improve travel efficiency and reduce congestion. In the rail sector, two multi tracking projects in West Bengal and Jharkhand will expand the network by about 192 km, enhance freight capacity, and improve operational efficiency. The Cabinet also sanctioned the upgrade of a Tamil Nadu airport to international status, supporting regional connectivity and economic growth.

The Union Cabinet recently approved a set of highway and railway projects with a combined investment of INR 8,313 crore, aimed at improving connectivity and supporting economic activity across several regions.

A significant decision involved upgrading a section of National Highway 752D in Madhya Pradesh. The 80.4 km stretch between Badnawar and Timarwani will be expanded from an intermediate-lane road to a four-lane highway. This upgrade will create a continuous four-lane corridor connecting Ujjain to the Timarwani interchange on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, significantly reducing travel time by around an hour. Authorities noted that the project would improve regional connectivity, facilitate smoother movement of freight and passenger traffic, and better accommodate long-distance transport, especially during peak travel periods.

In the rail sector, the Cabinet approved multi-tracking projects for two major routes in West Bengal and Jharkhand. The projects include adding a fourth line on the Sainthia Pakur section and the Santragachi Kharagpur stretch. These additions will expand the Indian Railways network by approximately 192 kilometres. Officials highlighted that these enhancements will ease congestion, allow more freight and passenger trains to operate efficiently, and boost the capacity for transporting commodities such as coal, steel, cement, foodgrains, petroleum products, and containerized cargo. Once operational, these sections are expected to support an additional 31 million tonnes of freight annually.

Alongside road and rail projects, the Cabinet cleared a proposal to upgrade an airport in Tamil Nadu to international status. This decision is aimed at improving air connectivity, encouraging tourism, and supporting regional economic development.

Officials emphasized that these approvals reflect the government's broader strategy to integrate different modes of transport. By connecting major highways to expressways and improving rail corridors for freight and passenger traffic, these projects are designed to improve logistical efficiency, reduce transit times, and strengthen regional economic networks.
