Synopsis

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is nearing the completion of 906 rehabilitation flats for families affected by the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project in Mumbai. Built across seven residential buildings at Kanjurmarg West, each unit is around 300 sq ft and includes basic living facilities. In the first phase, 252 families are expected to be relocated once construction is completed by the end of March. The project also includes community amenities such as a market, health centre, library, and sewage treatment plant to support residents.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is in the final stages of constructing rehabilitation housing for families affected by the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project. The flats are being developed at Kanjurmarg West to relocate residents whose homes were impacted by the road expansion work.

A total of 906 flats are being constructed across seven residential buildings on a plot measuring around 10,050 sq metres. Each building will have a ground floor and 23 upper floors. Apartments are compact, around 300 sq ft, and include a living room, bedroom with an attached bathroom, and a kitchen. The design focuses on providing essential facilities while optimizing space for families.

In the first phase of rehabilitation, 252 project-affected families will be relocated once the flats are ready by the end of March. Two of the seven buildings have already reached the final stage of construction, while work on the remaining structures is progressing quickly. Civic officials are overseeing construction closely to ensure quality and timely completion.

The housing complex is planned with additional civic infrastructure to support residents. Facilities will include a market area, community hall, library, health centre, and a sewage treatment plant. Utilities like water supply, electricity, sanitation, lifts, staircases, and fire safety arrangements are being completed to ensure safe and functional living spaces.

Officials recently inspected the site to assess progress and verify the quality of ongoing work. They reviewed structural components, internal facilities, and safety measures, directing teams to ensure all amenities are completed in time for handover.

This rehabilitation is part of the larger GMLR project, a 12.2-km corridor connecting the Western Express Highway at Goregaon to the Eastern Express Highway at Mulund. The road is expected to reduce travel time across the suburbs from around 75 minutes to about 25 minutes. The entire project is estimated to cost around INR 16,000 crore and is being executed in multiple phases.

The next phase involves constructing underground tunnels using tunnel boring machines, scheduled to begin in June 2026. Preparatory work includes building a launching shaft at Amar Nagar, and residents from that area are among those being relocated to the Kanjurmarg housing complex. Timely completion of these flats is essential to ensure that construction activities proceed without delays.

Once construction is finished and approvals are in place, eligible families will be allotted units. The housing development ensures that the GMLR project can progress on schedule while providing affected families with safe and functional living spaces.
