Nearly 2,000 residents from about 87 colonies in Sanganer, Jaipur, organised a protest march in the past week expressing concern over the legal status of their homes following land acquisition by the Rajasthan Housing Board. Residents said thousands of families had purchased plots through cooperative societies and constructed houses over the years, supported by bank loans and local infrastructure development. The land was later included in an acquisition process by the housing board, creating uncertainty over ownership for approximately 15,000 houses built in the area. The demonstration, led by the Niyaman Hetu Sangharsh Samiti, sought government intervention to safeguard existing homes and explore solutions such as regularisation or de-acquisition of the land. Protest organisers indicated that the agitation could intensify if the state government does not respond to their demands for clarity and legal protection.
Nearly 2,000 residents from 87 colonies in the Sanganer area of Jaipur staged a protest march in the past week seeking protection for their homes amid uncertainty arising from a land acquisition process initiated by the Rajasthan Housing Board. The demonstration was organised to highlight concerns that the legal status of thousands of residential properties could be affected if the acquisition proceedings move forward without resolution.
Participants in the march included homeowners and local residents who said they had purchased plots through cooperative housing societies and subsequently constructed houses with bank financing. Over the years, these colonies developed basic civic infrastructure including internal roads, electricity connections, water supply and sewerage systems. Residents stated that families have been living in the area for several years after building homes and establishing neighbourhood facilities.
According to local representatives associated with the protest, the housing board's acquisition process has raised questions about the ownership status of properties in the area. They indicated that roughly 15,000 houses have already been constructed across the 87 colonies and that the uncertainty has created concern among residents about the future of their homes. The protest march, which passed through parts of the locality, also caused traffic disruption along Tonk Road for several hours during the demonstration.
The agitation was organised under the banner of the Niyaman Hetu Sangharsh Samiti, a residents' group formed to coordinate efforts related to the issue. Representatives of the committee said they had earlier issued a 15-day ultimatum to the state government seeking intervention to address the matter but had not received a response. The march was intended to draw attention to the situation and press for administrative action to protect homeowners.
Committee representatives indicated that residents had approached multiple authorities, including state government officials, to request a resolution. They stated that options such as legislative intervention, cabinet-level discussion or reconsideration of the acquisition could be explored in order to regularise the colonies or safeguard existing housing developments.
Residents involved in the protest emphasised that the issue concerns the security of homes built over many years and affects thousands of families living in the Sanganer area. Organisers of the march said that unless concrete steps are taken to address the matter, further demonstrations could follow as residents continue to seek clarity on the status of their properties and protection from potential displacement.
The dispute reflects broader challenges surrounding land acquisition and regularisation of residential colonies in rapidly expanding urban areas, where informal or cooperative-society developments sometimes intersect with land reserved for public agencies. In the case of Sanganer, residents are seeking a policy or legal resolution that would allow existing housing to remain while addressing the underlying land ownership issues.
