The Union government has approved 100 electric buses for Belagavi city under the PM-e Bus Sewa scheme, Rajya Sabha MP Iranna Kadadi said during the recent budget session of Parliament. The sanction is part of a wider allocation that includes 750 electric buses for ten cities in neighbouring Karnataka. Along with the buses, the Centre has also approved infrastructure support, including a control room, charging points, depot facilities and related technical systems, with around INR 6.8 crore earmarked for these civil works. The move is intended to modernise and decarbonise Belagavi's public transport system, enhancing cleaner, sustainable urban mobility in the city. The electric bus rollout aligns with national efforts to reduce emissions and expand organised public transport networks in tier-2 urban centres.
The Union government has approved the deployment of 100 electric buses for Belagavi city as part of the PM-e Bus Sewa scheme, a decision confirmed in Parliament during the recent budget session, sources said. Under the programme, the Centre has also sanctioned civil and electrical infrastructure support for the electric bus service in Belagavi, including the establishment of a control room and other facilities essential for operations. Approximately INR 6.8 crore has been allocated for these supporting works, which include charging points, depot infrastructure and related technical systems needed to maintain and operate the new electric fleet.
The approval for Belagavi is part of a broader push to modernise public transport networks in smaller and emerging cities under the national scheme. In the wider regional allocation, 750 electric buses have been approved for ten cities in Karnataka. These buses will be accompanied by corresponding infrastructure, with significant funds earmarked to develop depots and charging facilities that will support sustainable operations.
The PM-e Bus Sewa scheme aims to promote cleaner and more efficient urban mobility, with a focus on reducing pollution and improving the quality of public transport. By expanding electric bus fleets and associated infrastructure in tier-2 cities such as Belagavi, policymakers are seeking to enhance service reliability and support broader goals of emission reduction and sustainable urban development.
The initiative is expected to help reduce dependence on diesel-powered buses and encourage adoption of zero-emission vehicles, contributing to environmental sustainability objectives. The integration of electric buses into Belagavi's transit network also reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen organised public transport services outside the largest metropolitan areas, offering residents cleaner and more modern mobility options.
