Synopsis

Construction of stage II of the Trichy Junction Road Over Bridge is moving forward with authorities targeting an opening by June after multiple delays slowed the project earlier. The Southern Railway has begun assembling key steel spans procured from Katpadi, while the state highways department is progressing with approach roads and retaining walls. Delays were largely caused by land acquisition issues and late procurement of bridge components. Once operational, stage II will handle outbound city traffic, complementing the already functional first stage and easing congestion around the busy junction.

Work on stage II of the Trichy Junction Road Over Bridge has picked up pace, with railway and highways officials now working towards opening the stretch by June. The project, which has faced repeated delays, is a key infrastructure link aimed at improving traffic flow around one of the city's busiest transport hubs.

The Southern Railway has started assembling a steel girder span sourced from Katpadi for the bowstring structure that will cross the railway tracks near Trichy Junction. Welding and assembly work is underway, and another span is expected to reach the site shortly. Officials involved in the project have indicated that installing the spans on the supporting pillars will require heavy cranes and could take close to 50 days, followed by mandatory safety inspections before the structure is cleared for use.

Delays in stage II were mainly due to slow procurement of bridge components and land acquisition issues, particularly in the Posts and Telegraphs Colony area. These factors stalled progress for several months, pushing the completion timeline well beyond initial targets.

Alongside the railway works, the state highways department is advancing construction of approach roads and retaining walls at both ends of the bridge. Work is progressing near the Divisional Railway Manager's office and the Aristo statue junction. Soil filling and wall construction for the ramps are ongoing, while power utility TANGEDCO is expected to shift electricity poles at the Mannarpuram end to enable further road development.

Stage I of the Trichy Junction RoB is already operational and caters to vehicles entering the city from the Chennai-Trichy-Madurai national highway. Once stage II is commissioned, it will be used primarily by vehicles exiting Trichy, allowing a clearer separation of traffic movement and reducing congestion near the railway station and surrounding arterial roads.
