Synopsis

The Puducherry government has started implementing a housing subsidy scheme to help low-income families replace hut dwellings with concrete houses. The initiative combines support from the Union Territory administration with benefits under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana to improve housing quality for the poor and marginalized. Chief Minister N Rangasamy said the scheme is part of a wider welfare approach that also includes higher monthly pensions for elderly people, destitute women and widows, with a focus on improving basic living standards.

The Puducherry government has moved forward with a housing subsidy scheme aimed at ensuring that economically weaker families are able to shift from hut-based dwellings to concrete structures. The initiative is being implemented by linking local subsidies with assistance available under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, allowing beneficiaries to receive higher overall financial support for house construction.

Chief Minister N Rangasamy explained that the scheme is intended to address long-standing housing issues faced by poor and marginalised sections of society. He stated that the government's objective is to gradually reduce the number of huts across the Union Territory by enabling eligible families to build durable homes that offer better safety and living conditions.

The chief minister was speaking at a public event in Tirukanchi village, where enhanced monthly pensions were distributed to elderly citizens, destitute women and other vulnerable groups. He pointed out that pension support for senior citizens has been increased by INR 500 per month, while additional financial assistance is also being extended to widows and destitute women through welfare departments.

Rangasamy said that the housing subsidy scheme complements other social welfare measures already in place and reflects the administration's focus on basic needs such as shelter and income security. He also referred to the role of the Social Welfare Department and the Department of Women and Child Development in identifying beneficiaries and ensuring that assistance reaches intended households.

The chief minister criticised the previous Congress DMK government, stating that it had failed to strengthen welfare schemes or increase pension amounts during its tenure. He alleged that earlier administrations did not take sufficient steps to address the housing and livelihood concerns of the poor.

Puducherry has previously implemented housing programmes in collaboration with central schemes to support economically weaker sections. The current subsidy plan builds on those efforts by offering integrated financial assistance, with the aim of making permanent housing more accessible to low-income families across both urban and rural areas of the Union Territory.
