The expansion of Raxaul Airport in Bihar has moved forward after the state government released INR 207.70 crore for land acquisition and compensation. The project focuses on extending the runway to 2,360 metres, allowing operations of larger commercial aircraft and defence jets. Located close to the India-Nepal border, the airport holds strategic and economic importance. Once upgraded, the facility is expected to support future passenger services and strengthen regional connectivity, while also enhancing emergency and defence readiness in the border belt.
The long-pending expansion of Raxaul Airport in Bihar's East Champaran district has gained momentum following the release of INR 207.70 crore towards land acquisition and compensation for affected landowners. The funding clears a key hurdle that had slowed progress on the brownfield airport project, which is considered important for both civilian and strategic purposes due to its proximity to the India-Nepal border.
As per the approved plan, the airport's runway will be extended to around 2,360 metres from its existing length. This upgrade will enable the airport to handle larger commercial aircraft such as narrow-body jets, apart from allowing fighter and defence aircraft to operate during emergencies. Officials involved in the project have indicated that the new runway specifications are designed to meet both civil aviation and defence requirements.
The airport layout and technical design have already been finalised by civil aviation authorities. Along with the runway extension, the expansion includes the construction of a new terminal building, an air traffic control tower, apron space, and other essential infrastructure needed for regular flight operations. Work on these components is expected to progress in phases once land acquisition formalities are fully completed.
Raxaul Airport was originally developed as an emergency landing ground in the years following the 1962 conflict and has since remained underutilised for commercial aviation. The current expansion aims to change that status by preparing the airport for future passenger services, which could improve travel access for north Bihar and adjoining regions of Nepal.
The project is also seen as part of a wider effort to strengthen infrastructure in border districts. Improved air connectivity from Raxaul is expected to support trade, tourism, and people-to-people movement, while reinforcing logistical and strategic capabilities in the region.
